Chris from Custom Water Cuts did an amazing job rendering the CAD drawing and cutting the aluminum for an upcoming project of mine, and I thought I'd share some pics of his craftwork.

Project Mojo

This is cut from 1/4" material. The "Goldberg" style projector reel is 12" in diameter, and the top part with the Avid logo is 15" long.

The 'd' looks like it has very sharp points, I didn't know (anything about watercutting) you could get that fine.

You are going to make the 'reel' spin of course. ;)

Yeah I'm amazed everytime I see the degree of accuracy these machines can achieve--Then again it really has to do with the CAD art that goes in, and the whole setup process I guess. I need to visit Chris and see this done first hand in the shop!

Chris as does outstanding work. He's got a degree in Engineering too, so his CAD designs are excellent. I've used him for numerious projects and will continue to do so.

looks like we're going to see a video editing/production rig coming from Crim!

suhweet!

too bad it is going on an avid system...FCP would be nicer but that is a different thread ;) as always...looking forward to yet another crimson project !!

nice, and when YOU do projects, they ussually come out really nice. btw, I saw that intervew of yours.

Has anyone heard from Chris lately? I'm trying to get an estimate from him on having some aluminum parts cut out and I haven't heard back from him in at least a week and a half...

I had emailed him last week about getting an estimate, and have not yet heard back either.

He is alive and busy. So just give him a little time and he will make wonders for you.

FCP??? LoL...why go second best? ;)

Chris is around..he's just slammed business wise. I still see him online daily with MSN Messenger.

That's a tight looking peice, can't wait to see the whole case....
Not to be nosy or anything, but could you give a ballpark figure on price including design and the like? I am thinking about going this route for a piece on my motorcycle....

Waterjet is just one of those things that just absolutely blows my mind any time I think about it. To cut 1/4" steel with water - and that accurately...thats just nuts.

Looks like a good piece Crim, can't wait to see another worklog from you soon :)

That is grade A metalwork if I've ever seen it. I look forward to seeing a worklog soon. BTW, could this project just possibly incorporate the Avid Mojo box? :D

excellent - i just emailed Chris. well, actually, i submitted a question to his FAQ page. i'm in san francisco, he's in redwood city - i drive by it on my daily commute. if i can meet him face to face and not have to ship things, that would be so AWESOME! i have a lian-li pc-65 with right panel just aching for an intricate backlit design cut. :)

Crimson Sky, what quality grade is it on the cuts? Ss you might know there are Q1 to Q5 where Q1 is just break through the material and Q5 is satin finish of the cut.

It do look like Q3 to me. Any idea?

I would kill to have my own flowjet. They produce some really nice results and the abrasive is a hell of a lot cheaper than mill bits.

You know I do get around sadly I am no longer in Redwood City now in San Jose and the waterjet its self is located in Redding CA. Its a rather long story but I would gladly meet with you for lunch but unless you want to drive a couple hundred miles with me it would be hard for you to see watercutting being done, I am however working on installing a web cam so everybody can see the watercutting being done on a daily basis.

And what’s ironic if any of you have tried to get watercutting done in my area (San Jose) they will Never Ever let you near the waterjet due to DANGER reasons and possibility of getting sued.

The FAQ does work great and I always get back to people when questions are asked. However recently I have been getting a number of questions with out the return Email section being filled in. LOL well if you don’t fill in the return email section don’t expect replies.

I work great with MSN and AOL. MSN account is cjbaltar@hotmail.com and AOL is cjbaltar. Feel free to ask me anything.

A huge thanks to Crimson and Mashie for the kind words and posting the work I have cut. I am so swamped with everything it is hard to keep up with everything! If you have not received a quote from me feel free to email me back but be assured Im working on it :) I used to do things with a 2 - 3 day turnaround but well more business brings less time and longer turn around.

Questions or anything feel free Chris@customwatercuts.com
I am working to fix the FAQ so the return email address is required or you can’t submit a question.

Mashie you are correct it is a quality of 3 on the cut how ever I vary the speed slower and it is actually better quality of cutting than just letting the waterjet use all of it presets when the Q3 setting is set. But it is the best price to quality if quality of 3 is used as the starting point.
