Watercooling: Some basic questions

Okies, I'm building my new system into a Lian Li PC-A05, and whilst the general advice is to stick to air cooling, I'm still tempted to watercool it.

The question is though, is 1 x 120mm raidiator actually going to do anything useful if I cool the chipset and a GeForce 8800GTX?


Also, does anyone know where I can find something like the Koolance RP-1000 in the UK? Given that it's such a tiny case, I feel a bay mounted option would be the most effective, leaving me 1 bay for the optical drive and I can use the external 3 1/2" drive for the harddrive.
 
i wouldn't do the chipset ... for a few reasons but it's a personal thing and some people feel they have to or that they gain from it

a single rad should be enough but dual length would certainly be better.. single 120 rad for cpu and gpu is usually not a good idea so if you plan to water cool cpu/gpu/ and chipset then 2x120 rad is a must

i personally run a 3x for cpu and gpu

I don't know very much about complete systems like that Koolance unit, but it's general knowledge that the best performing water cooling systems are made from scratch.

That said, you will definitely see a very nice drop in temps on an 8800GTX with a 120mm radiator, even if you're using a Thermaltake kit.

However, water cooling the chipset is considered by many people to be a complete waste, since it hardly ever get you any PC performance benefit, and adds resistance and heat to the water loop that is cooling more important things. In this case, I would argue that if all you've got is a 120mm radiator, you should leave the chipset alone and just cool the 8800GTX.

If you can get a 2x120 radiator, then I would cool the CPU and GPU. Cooling those two components should be the main goal of any water cooling system.
 
So basically you need 1 x 120mm radiator per item you want to cool inside the case? Probably leaves me with having to fit an external radiator then because I'd want to cool the GPU and CPU (not chipset, late night posting strikes again!)

Any suggestions for UK available kit that goes with a black case? Ideally I still want a bay mounted pump/resevoir combination, especially if it comes with a monitoring system, but if not any other easy to install alternatives would be appreciated.
 
depending on the cpu, those 8800s dump ALOT of heat, you dont necessarily need 1x120mm rad per item, but you will need 2x or 3x120 for cpu+gpu. a larger radiator will only decrease temps to a point, after that point, the only reason to get a bigger radiator would be to add more components. and i have my northbridge in my loop because A) its silent and B) most importatly, theres next to zero airflow thru my case so a passive heatsink wouldnt do much but heat up all the other stuff in there. and C) my motherboard requires a large amount of voltage thru the northbridge in order to get a decent FSB.
 
Yeah, an overclocked GTX will put out about 180w of heat

An overclocked conroe will dump upwards of 100w, with a max of around 140 (a quad core can put out alot more than that).

a Northbridge will put out at most 50w.


Most (BIP, MCR220) 120mm radiators will dissipate about 150w of heat (6lpm @ 50cfm @ 20c) and a thermochill PA series 120mm radiator will disipate about 175w. A BIX radiator will dissipate around 100w with 50cfm fans or up to 200w with 90cfm.
