Watercooling Raptors

I need to watercool 4 hard drives. two of which are raptors. Ideally if one cooler could support two drives, one on top, one on bottom, that would be great, does anybody know of such a product? Don't talk me out of watercooling them, they are getting watercooled.
 
there is really no need to water cool the raptors.....but whatever ya wanna do.
 
Seems all the people who think they don't need to be water cooled never have run any 10-15,000 RPM drives. Anyway there are a lot of ways to go here. What size tubing are you currently using to watercool your other items? Or are you just wanting to cool the hard drives?
 
10k and 15k drives run hot, it’s their nature. WD states that they are within safe range up to I believe it is 65c. The fact remains that for every 10c you add to any electronic product you start to half its life.

I cool my raptors with a simple fan setup and they run at system temp, 28c and I’m comfortable with that.

If Patman wants water-cooling then it’s his choice. Cool drives are happy long lasting drives.

I have my 36 Gb Raptors being cooled by a pair of 80mm case fans, but my next box I'm building now will be water cooled. I will be sticking the two 36Gb's along with three more 74Gb Raptors into my V2000 case and I'm trying to get rid of fans that make a lot of noise. :D
 
I've been hearing a lot about the hard drive cooling going faulty and leaking and destroying the drives.I've heard lots of it from local people that are pure experts.Some guy should be the case and it totally got me away from the idea of water cooling my hard drives.

MAY I ADD THAT THIS DOESNT APPLY TO EVERYONE SO DONT FLAME IT!

Just curious as to where you heard this as waterblocks don't generally leak, but inproperly installed connections do.

Bah. In terms of heat output, raptors are *nothing* compared to Real 10K or 15K SCSI drives.

That's a nice comparison of operating temperatures between both capacity raptors, a 10K SCSI drive, a 15K SCSI drive, an a 7200 SATA drive. The raptors are down there with the 7200RPM drive
Raptors don't get that hot, relativly speaking; any quiet fan @ 7v will be enough to keep them happy for years to come

Seems like everyone has an axe to grind these days (even me lol), but as the OP has pointed out he is not interested in hearing why he should not watercool his hard drives, just wants to know how the best way to go about it. :rolleyes:
 
I know Koolance makes some HD watercoolers, and I think the support 2 drives, one on top one on bottom. Might check that out.

Its the last one that supports dual drive configurations, although it says it needs custom mounting, I doubt that would a problem ;) Now these are made for use with Koolance setups, so I don't know about fitings or any thing, but hopefully this will at least give some options.
 
I love it, i specifically tell them I am not going to get talked out of it and the FIRST response is trying to do just that and only that. What an idiot. I would be using I think it's 1/2 tubing, whatever the nicest swiftec/danger den pump uses.

Well lots of people don't read the thread before they jump in with their favorite brand of religious flaming fire ;)

Okay lets see 1/2" tubing makes for a little more trouble, but I think it is doable. Most of the HD coolers on the market are setup for 1/4 to 3/8 tube ID's. So you could use a Y fitting of some type and run some parallel lines so as not to disrupt your 1/2" flow. Do you want the drives in the HD rack at the bottom of the case or would you be willing to use your 5 1/4" slots?

I think they are just trying to save you some money really. Just friendly advice like not needing them in Raid 0 if you're only gaming, and how you could have saved money and had the same sound quality by getting something other than "Monster Cable." But that's completely different thread. ;)

FWIW - My Raptors with a 20cfm fan blowing NEAR them (read: not on them) never go 8c over ambient.

Do you know something we don't know? Don't think it is possibe due to the size of the coolers, but I'm all ears. :D

Well since you like Cathar statements so much, how about one of his other posts: "Sorry to inform you but it is not about what you want, but about what the OP wants." (note: paraphrased because I didn't want to take the time to find the exact wording). I think the OP made his desire for info pretty explicit in that he didn't want to hear about why he shouldn't watercool his drives. :rolleyes: So instead of wasting his time, how about making some suggestions that will go to the heart of the OP's question?
 
okay:

If you're dead set on doing it, don't fuck up your primary cooling with hard drive coolers. Keep the 1/2" stuff happy and alone; get a second, smaller pump, and run them in their own, smaller diameter loop. If you don't want to drop in a second radiator, then have both loops share a resevoir.

edit: and btw, reading other opinions is never a waste of time, unless you're a hardheaded person that won't be swayed even by reality

On a side note, the waterblock help reduce the noise level. When using cases such as the V series, any interior noise is heard. I personally like my raptor watercooled. Runs a smooth 28c with zero noise.
 
Hey now, I think it would be better to allow every one to put in their opinions, just as long as it doesn't get into a flame war. A different perspective isn't a bad thing, although I would rather have a more in depth explination. Im guessing the target of a Drive cage with watercooling would be very very small, and not really worth the money for research and development.

If he is going to be cooling 4 drives (2 of them raptors).
I wouldn't tie the cooling of these drives into your main Water cooling for CPU / GPU?

I would say to get a bay slot cooler.
As you don't need a large Rad, or 2/3 fans

I agree. That is why I run a separate loop just for my hard drive blocks and Northbridge.
 
Okay so how about this pump and reservoir combo called a Compacttube mated to an Eheim 600. The disadvantage here is that these pumps are AC so you would need a little switching board like an Asetek unit to turn on the pump when the computer gets turned on. Another possibilty is to use one of the new version 3.5 Aquastream 12v pumps and an Aquainlet attached for a reservoir. Or conversely you could do a simple T-Line depending on your tastes. The advantage with the version 3.5 Aquastream is that you can adjust flow from a comparable 1046 up to a little more than a 1048 with jumpers on the controller board.

For the HD coolers themselves you have quite a bit of choice when using a separate loop. I personally like the Koolance Hydra-Pak coolers as I have three of them in my V2000 case. Others like R1ckCa1n prefer to use the Aquadrive Micro. There are also HD coolers on the market that use 5 1/4" slots like the Aquadrive or even the Aquadrive Dual. Another manufacturer called Watercool makes the Silentstar, but with less looks and of course less price :D

If you still want to use the DD loop you already have then we would probably have to go with the Silentstar cooler as I think that comes with a 1/4 BSPP fitting.
 
Well, a followup question from someone looking at the same questions...
I'm in the process of buying the components for my new water-cooled system. Originally, I was going to try to go for a high-flow system, because I was concerned with the number of different components it might eventually go through. I figured I would start with CPU & GPU, then maybe northbridge and HDs later on.

I was looking at maybe a 1/2" set-up with a MCP-655 pump and BIX 2x120 radiator...(and haven't really planned exact CPU/GPU blocks yet, but have some ideas)

But now I'm wondering, it sounds like a smaller, low-flow system might be good for the northbridge and HDs??...based off the advice above...maybe some standalone bay-unit?

Ok, well, then what about my original loop? Should I still bother with the high-flow stuff, or just go low-flow there also (and eventually have 2 low-flow systems)?...or leave it 1/2"? Will it make a big difference on just a CPU/GPU/(radiator) loop (to go to 3/8")?


Also, one more thing -- I'm interested in the comment about sharing a common reservoir as to not need an additional radiator...anyone have any experience with that?...how well does that work in practice?
