So here's the first post in my likely to be short but sweet worklog. I recently built a new system, which consists of:

Athlon 64 x2 3800+
Asus M2N-E
2GB XMS DDR2 667
evga 7900GT KO Reloaded
Antec SmartPower 500W PSU
Coolermaster Centurion 5 case

I like the case design more than most. My problem is that I need too many hard drives, and no cases truly fit my need to stick 5 or 6 in one nice system, yet have it be reasonably sized for my office. So I stuck most of the drives in my old system, and put it in the back of the basement as a file server. This machine will house maybe 2 HD's, but will function as my daily workstation. I'm a programmer by trade, overclocker by habit, so I need a system that's fast and stable while preferably being relatively quiet.

After building the machine the first time, it was plenty quiet, but my temps were not satisfactory (45i/52l). I turned off all of the Cool n Quiet and fan speed management in the BIOS, and while the system runs slightly cooler (35i/42l), it's a bit louder now. So I decided to finally take my first plunge into H2O cooling after many years of overclocking CPU's on air alone.

My first loop is going to be CPU only, but I plan to add a Maze4 GPU block in the near future, with the idea being to keep things cool under moderate overclocking while maintaining minimal noise.

My watercooling setup so far is:

Danger Den D5 pump
Danger Den TDX CPU block
Black Ice Xtreme X-flow radiator
All .5" fittings with 7/16 masterkleer
I'll also be using Pentosin mix as a coolant

Here's a few pics to get everything started... first a couple shots of the computer as she sits currently:

Spent some time test fitting things to determine where everything will go. This case does not allow too much room for internal radiators, but I really didn't want to go external - mainly wanted to keep low profile and have things be easy to move... but also because I have a Golden Retriever and his hair gets in everything that is not sealed down nicely.

Flow will be from lower rad outlet->cpu->T fitting->pump->upper rad inlet. Obviously I will have a fillport up top that branches into the T.

The radiator fits perfectly below the single DVD-RW... judging by the fit I have decided to run 2 120mm fans in a push/pull configuration. I can attach the front fan between the steel case front and the front panel, mounting it using two easily removable 5.25" bay blockers included in the case. That way I can get great airflow over this thick radiator without resorting to a loud fan like a Panaflow... I'm thinking 2x Aerocool Extreme Turbines or else the Antec Tricool. Both look to allow around 80CFM @ ~30dB, plus either way I'll probably control their voltage to optimize airflow vs. noise. Also note the whole black part of the case front is mesh, so I should be able to get decent airflow, though almost certainly air will be exiting out the front of the case in this configuration.

Anyway, that's all for now. I'll start cleaning the parts up tomorrow and hopefully will have a test loop setup sometime this week. Stay tuned for more...

I have a CM5 case and i also find it gets quite noisy!
Take a look at this for some more modded CM5's HERE

the antec tri cool fans die pretty quick I've used them in a few cases

you should buy some arctic cooling 12025s imo those are dual ball berring and sleeved

what pump are you going to use?

Ended up with just the regular Antec double ball single speed case fan. The egg had em onsale and I had some paypal credit, plus they get em here in 2 days. Supposedly 79CFM@2000rpm and 30 dB. I plan to run 2 on the rad so I'll use a fan controller to spin them down a touch.

The pump is the DD5/Laing D5-38. Should have more for the log tomorrow when I actually shut this puppy down and start cutting!

Alright here are a few more images... today I basically got everything test fit and prepped for the most part.

One misfire occurred when Danger Den shorted me a spring on the TDX block. Also a fun little hassle was that after only a week or two of use and mild overclocking the processor was straight up stuck to the stock HSF... so stuck that when i levered on the fan to get it off, it pulled the proc right out of the socket, even though the lever was down!
No damage it appears... here's hoping!

Test fitting the TDX block to the motherboard (still debating which accelerator to use):

I cut out the marked areas on the 5.25" bay blockers as shown in the first round of photos above. Using some #6 x 1/2" pan head screws I mounted the fans and radiator to the modified bay blockers, and test fit in the case. Looks like a very nice and snug fit.

Then I cut holes in the motherboard tray for some clean wire routing, as well as cut a hole in the top for the fillport. Then I threw a quick coat of gloss black spray paint on the inside of the case and the bay blockers... the OEM grey just would not cut it with a window... It doesn't look that great, but the goal is not to be perfect, just to make things look relatively consistent from a distance. Also will be doing the drive bays eventually, once I find some vinyl dye for the retention mechanisms. Edit:Just gave her a second coat inside and out... looks much better, no more grey except for the window side of the drive cage.

Finally I found this 3.5" 3 fan controller at CompUSA for only 10 bucks. Cheaper than most other units I've seen online, no annoying LEDs, and the gloss black matches the case pretty well. Claims to do 4-12v with 10w per channel, and also tosses in 2 more USB ports. I'll be using this to tone down the radiator fans when not gaming, as well as to control the noise on the 3rd 120mm fan that will be in the back of the case.

That's all for the moment, have been soaking the TDX in vinegar as well as flushing the radiator all day. Tonight I hope to throw everything together for a bit and test flush it... if the paint is dry enough.

Hopefully more tomorrow... I want to get this thing running again!

Alrighty, while I sit here and stare at this thing, making sure no leaks are occurring, I figure I'll post a few more pics from assembly time this morning...

The second coat of paint really cleaned things up a bit, though the crappy spray cans are not easy to get a consistent finish with. I'll be giving things another coat in a couple weeks when I take it all back apart to install the GPU block. Also at that time I'll do up some vinyl dye on the plastic drive locks, paint the drive bays and the psu housing. (so no ripping on my overspray! :D )

And finally here she is undergoing leak testing...
IMG_3358.jpg

If the rest of the afternoon goes well I'll be installing cables this evening, and hopefully enjoying a few rounds of CS:S before I call it a weekend. Of course, I'll post some final pics once I get the all case goodies installed and the final tidying up complete. Cheers!

That's actually the pump inlet... the pump is on its side, and the outlet faces upward and pumps to the top radiator barb. After that everything flows downward due to gravity.

So the T is dumping in right before the pump inlet. I can't really make it any shorter without kinking.. besides it is all downhill so it doesn't take any actual pumping to make it flow.

No temps yet, still leak testing.. perhaps tonight before bed. Anxious to see what basic gains in temp are had using the TDX and AS5 over the stock HSF and thermal goop. And frankly, anxious to get my game on again!

Looking great so far. We have the exact same setup except for the rad. I have the BIX2. I'm doing some mods in my case and hopfully should begin leak testing tomorrow morning. Can you tell me how u post pics, I've been taking pics along the way and would love to post them for all.

FYI for those interested I am typing this message on this machine. Loudest thing by FAR in the case is the 7900GT fan unit... I'll definitely be adding the Maze 4 as soon as it arrives. For now I have lots of fans still installed, but the 3x120 fans are all on a fan controller, and the single 60mm fan for the HDs is set in the BIOS to silent mode, so I can't even hear it. It's really nice having two fans in push/pull on the rad, and running them powered down a tad. Perfect for leaving her running all day while I am at work. I sometimes remote in, but for the most part is just sits and idles, so no reason leaving the fans screaming all day.

Currently both radiator fans are set to about 50% on the controller and everything is pretty quiet... not bad for a mesh case. Temps are currently 32C on both cores doing normal desktop type stuff (currently distilled water only)... I'll be sure to get some CS:S rounds in to gauge temps at load, and I'll post those with my final round of photos a bit later this eve.

So no pics this time around, just fired up to have my machine back, and ready for further overclocking!

very nice! I'm geteting this case for my soson to be conroe rig and later on i'm thinking of watercooling it, thanks!
