What is the best waterblock for LGA 2011?
I have an old d-tek fuzion on my 980x which worked fine, but now upgrading to 3930K and need a new block.
 
It's the block that performs the best. Right now the XSPC Raystorm looks to be the best bang for buck you can get. Very good performance (top 5 blocks I believe) while having the lowest restriction out of any of them. The top 10 blocks all generally perform within 1-2 C of each other, and that gap gets smaller the higher-end you go.

I love the blue leds. But calculated offers no flow rate charts or specs. I was looking at Swiftech apogee hd and it has a flow of 7-8 lpm which is very high. How does this raystorm perform comparibly?

For the money raystorm is the winner. Might have a 2-3c difference from a few others listed, but save money. And wc is so good these days temp doesn't matter. No true wc runs anywhere near the temps air does. It's the volts that are gonna kill your hardware, not temp. And how well boards can supply the clean power.
 
The Raystorm is the king of low restriction/high flow rates based on martin's testing.
 
So which one would be the absolute best block without price consideration ?
Except of course that sterling silver one for $250+ :)
 
Just to note, the raystorm will not work with the rampage iv motherboard due to backplate conflicts. Still have yet to hear back from xspc regarding this.

I thought the Rampage IV Extreme motherboard had a second 1366 style backplate. If so, it should work just fine with the 1366 backplate, since the Raystorm is designed for 1366, and the 2011 holes are the same as 1366. 2011 introduces a new backplate style, which probably is incompatible with most 1366 mounts (I think).

Hrmm you are right but now im super confused. Is there some kind of offset somewhere that is not calcualted on XSPC's part for the Rampage IV? I thought Asus was the leader of the pack in keeping with industry standard clearances etc.... I have a Rampage IV arriving on Monday and this is a bummer now that I do not have a waterblock to use until verification takes place first.
 
the 1366/2011 plate for the raystorm is too short to fit over either of the plates on the rampage. Not sure if this is just a rampage problem, but it fits perfectly over my classified 1366 board. The problem is that the rampage backplate is longer and has two additional holes on it to allow for some of the electronics on the back to stick through.

I'll see if I can improvise some pics, but I'm not taking my comp apart to get the best pics. You might be able to grind the raystorm plate down to fit flush against the mobo, but i'm just going to wait for the fix.

No problem, I also purchased it with the assumption that it was ready for socket 2011. I'm not sure who is at fault for it not working though, as it looks like it may just be a problem only for the Rampage IV, in which case it would be ASUS. Still no word from XSPC though.
 
no, the socket itself needs to be screwed into the rampage backplate, otherwise i'd have done that.
 
Based on what I saw in the Rampage IV Extreme preview, they included a tool to remove the 2011 backplate and install a 1366 backplate, which should have been included with the board.

XSPC did indicate on their site that the Raystorm and Rasa should be already compatible with 2011.

I may try this with my board to see how it works out. I have a rampage IV.
 
Post here when you find out it doesn't work; if possible post some pics so people can understand what I'm talking about as I'm not willing to disassemble my setup for some good pics.

The rampage small '1366' backplate is too long as the raystorm backplate is made to sit on top and cover a 1366 plate. However, due to the rampage backplates length and the shaped edges of the raystorm backplate, it sits on top of the plate with not enough room for the screws to make it in or for the adhesive to make contact with the motherboard. You could cut/grind at the raystorm backplate to get it to fit on top more than likely though, but I'm not willing to do that just yet.

And still no word from xspc, i'll email them again on monday.
 
not sure what you mean by commando exactly, but the socket cpu retention screws onto the backplates from asus. I guess it would be possible to skip out on the retention device and asus backplate and just use the waterblock and xspc backplate to keep the cpu in the socket, but you would lose some rigidity when when tightening. If someone tries this, let me know how it works out.
 
Okay so is a backplate necessary? What about commando mounting?

I highly doubt it would work well. The backplate is designed to protect the circuitry immediately below the CPU, as well as transfer the pressure directly to the CPU socket area.
