I had my opteron 146 CABYE running at 2.8ghz, prime95 stable for 12hours+ (1.525vcore), with ram running 1:1, 2x512mb OCZ Platinum R2 (3-3-3-7-1t), on good air (gigabyte gpower)
Decided that I wanted more power, so I made the move and homebuilt a watercooling kit. Dual inline pumps submerged in a resevoir, autoparts store 7"x7"x2" radiator (4x80mm fans blowing), and as swiftech 6000 series block (3/8" diamater one).
After messing with it quite extensively, I never got CS:S to play stabily at anything besides stock speeds. I thought it might be a ram issue, so I put a fan on them, and used a divider to have them run at stock speeds, still same issues. Dropped cpu down to 2.4, used dividers, still same issues.
At stock, everything is fine, but with any overclock at all, it randomly, and often, freezes, the game quits without warning, etc. etc. etc.
All the settings I've tried are prime95 stable (30mins+) superpi 32m stable, and memtest 86 stable.
Next thought, was that it was my video card, so I flashed it back to stock, same problems, but again, if CPU/RAM are at stock speeds, everything works great, no lockups at all. Heck I even tried formating my HD and reinstalling windows.
Now about a month after I started the watercooling ordeal, I installed the stock HSF (not heatpipe
), and it is perfectly stable at 2.4ghz (with ram divider). So what gives?
I've monitored the temps, and watercooling always kept it well lower, with even at 2.8ghz it would only hit ~50c under full load.
Any ideas?
