water cooling setup

no you dont need it... just screw the barbs in hand tight then do quarter turn with a wrench.. always works for me. just make sure the O-ring doesnt get jacked up and you'll be fine.
 
like he says, plumbers tape only really a good idea if using wrong size barbs (dont laugh, ive seen someone do this)with tubing or the o-rings are stuffed

im cringing at the thought of it... thats a disaster waiting to happen.
