water cooling questions..

i am considering going with water cooling, but have a few questions that are not answered in the faq.

first of all, i am concerned about the water in the system being able to get out. if i, for example, pick up the system and move it around a bit, is the water secure enough in the reservoir, for example, to not come out?

second, should i get a specialized case for water cooling? i have seen them around.. i was originally going to get the lian-li pc-65b with fan cooling. if i put water cooling in that case, would i take out the fans? or keep them in?

third, is there a guide online about how to setup a watercooling system in full detail, including recommendations for parts, brands, etc..? my big concern is screwing something up, and i don't want to pour water all over a brand new X2 processor (if i get one :)).
 
1.The water should be secure as long as you have all your lines securely fastend.

2. The case depends greatly on the type of components you plan on using. If you plan on using multiple WB (waterblocks), size of the pump, and the size of the radiator

some people keep the fans, some don't...again all depending on how much room you have to work w/

3. www.ocforums.com is pretty much where I learned all my watercooling info needs. There is so many options on the market. It's really up to you on how much you want to spend and what kind of performance you are looking to acheive.

My best suggestion is go through that gigantic watercooling setup and look at what people have, then you'll have an idea of what you like or don't

I want to cool both my CPU and GPU. I am using a reservoir. So should the setup go like this?

pump -> cpu -> gpu -> radiator -> reservoir -> pump? I am really confused where the reservoir gets put in to the equation. I would also think that the GPU wouldn't get cooled too well if it's being cooled after the CPU. Of course though, the CPU is more important to me.

I thought of something else... I am back to the Lian Li PC-65b case.. but how would I put a radiator in there if I only have 80mm fan holes? I would rather not cut. Plus, I would cut a 120mm hole in the top, except there's already an 80mm there. What alternatives do I have? I have seen people mounting radiators outside of their case, but I don't know how to mount like that.. also, I don't want to mount like that either.

Very generally speaking, placement of the parts doesnt matter _overly_ much once you have the system running and water being pumped through it all. In your test run, you should have the radiator right before the pump though, so that you don't burn the pump out by running it without water.
All that said, you can have different effects on your water temp depending on where you place your components. For instance, when water is pushed through a low- or mid-flow pump, it can often have it's temperature increased. Therefore, for best cooling of a critical component (your case CPU) you might consider the setup:
pump->radiator->cpu->gpu->reservoir->pump
that way the CPU receives the coldest water first.
Do note though, that sometimes this is not always the best option to use, and depending on your setup and needs, some other form of loop may be better for you.

If you plan on moving your system around a fair bit (i.e. LANs) then you have two proven choices to make in my opinion (I accept no responsibility for said opinions, dont flame me!):

1. Use a closed reservoir.
2. Use a closed system (no reservoir).

Personally, I prefer the closed sytem, because there isn't actually and area for the water to slosh around in (well, except the tubing I spose..... :rolleyes: ) and therefore the risk of it spilling over is very close to zero.
The closed reservoir is probably the one that you will want though, because it is far easier to fill and bleed (here comes another round of questions following that, I imagine :D ) than what a closed system is.

No, 2 80mm fans wont be as efficient as one 120mm fan, but why spend money on efficiency when you already have 2 perfectly good fans that will do an admirable job based on your needs already? And your watercooling dude. It's not exactly about efficiency.
 
really? i mean, i have just heard people saying that it's stupid to get even a dual 80mm radiator setup, because it won't work well at all. i would think thats not true... also, i have to consider the fact that my room is generally around 65 degrees (about 18 degrees celcius), and if i understand watercooling right, it is all about the temperature of the air coming in the computer...
 
Besides you are the one who set up the parameters about what you wanted and not wanted to do with your case. The dual 80 rad fulfills your requirements. :)
 
Yeah, you're right. The air being pushed into the radiator/case is a huge factor in your final water temps. Therefore, if you already have 18C air going in, a 120mm fan isn't going to hold much, if any, performance benefit over 2 80mm fans.
It's your first time. Keep it simple, what you don't like about this setup, you can always redo on a later one.
