ok everything is set up right.. but I'm idling at 40-43 celcius... for watercooling this isnt that great

specs:
Asus A8v Deluxe Rev2
3500+ 939 processor

Would the cause be too much thermal paste? I put a think layer that laid evenly over the entire processor.... so I really am stumped... I made sure that the block is tightly fastned on the cpu.. suggestions?
 
hm.. you're right.. i'm idle in that range.. but look at everything i have OC'ed :\. i did the dab and squish method on the CPU though, and my rig is pretty damn efficient at evac'ing all the hot air.. my ambient temp in room is hot too yet i still have pretty good temps.

Is that the single Xtreme with 2 fans, or the dual Xtreme radiator with 2 fans?

As far as thermal paste goes, you want a very very thin layer that evenly covers the entire core of the processor. Anything more than a thin layer lowers cooling performance, but I really don't think that's what giving you high temps. Youre sure the pump is connected the right way (outlet on top, inlet on side with the grey thingy), the loop order goes something like pump->TDX->radiator->reservoir->pump OR pump->radiator->TDX->reservoir->pump?

Let us have some more information about your setup. Maybe some pics would help.

Resevoir>pump>TDX block>radiator>resevoir

single xtreme 1 fan on each side. pump resevoir and radiator are built outside the case only thing internal is the tdx

An external setup? How long is the tubing leading in/out of the case. Long tubing = low flow = bad cooling. This may explain why your temps are so high. If your tubing is significantly longer than a similar internal setup, then you aren't likely to be getting good flowrates. Post some pics so we can take a look.

if your watching the temp put your hand in the case and put pressure on the waterblock, if its not tight enough the temp will change almost instantly.. its actually kinda neat how much pressure affects it.. my last watercooled computer i put together wasn't cooling right, block wasn't tightened enough (tho it was pretty much what the directions said)

You probably need half as much tubing for your setup, so that may be a factor. Why not go for the internal setup? The radiator could still be mounted to the top of the case, just move the pump and reservoir to the bottom of the case. That way you get rid of at least 3 ft. of unnecessary tubing and help your flowrates a hell of a lot.
 
so is flow rate the problem? cus i dont want to cut and try to get this shit to fit if it isnt..
 
This may have been asked before, but are you sure your WB is mounted flat on the core? If you're not making a full surface contact, you're inhibiting the transfer of heat from the core into the block.

EDIT: I don't think flow is your problem. Just an opinion. I'm not sure how the head loss of your block compares to other blocks, like the Maze4 and such.
 
That's a lot of tubing. And you didn't need Tygon if you're not going to bend any more than that.
 
so is it strictly the length of the tubing holding me back?

or is it something else...because there are people who cool video card, cpu, and chipset which uses about the same amount of tubing and they do fine
 
I have heard the MSI boards reads temps way off. Whats your load temps. Also whats your Room temp. I idle even higher than that without A/C but its 100% slient and stable. A good W/Cing etup should be around 5-10C above case temp, but in your case it would be oom temp ;)
 
the msi inst in yet. its an A8v deluxe at the moment

motherboard temp is around 25-30 centigrade
 
The tubing length may or may not be the main problem here...The fact remains that the excessive tubing is holding your system back a bit. It's not just the tubing, but the way it is setup. The pump has to pump straight up for a couple of feet before it gets to the radiator, then through long tubing down, and longer tubing upwards. All this vertical pumping leads to a significant loss of flowrate because of the high head loss. The Eheim isnt the best at keeping pressure up after that much tubing anyways, so flow may be a real issue here, but then again, maybe not.

Try something:

Place a fan over the processor socket like there would a heatsink/fan combo there. Sometimes the lack of airflow over the socket area can cause a thermistor to read higher than with heatsink/fan cooling because of the lack of air accross it. So put a fan on/near the waterblock/socket (it shouldnt help cooling any, jsut the reading from the diode or whatever) and report back. I wouldnt be suprised to see the temps come way down.

tried the fan.... went down 2 degrees... but i wont complain its 2 degrees =P
 
Seems to me that placing the two fans back to back like that really won't help at all, and may even be causing your poor temps. I say Try removing one of the fans. And then try placing on on each side of the radiator.

If you have 2 functional fans, you should place them on either side in a push/pull configuration.

Ah, I see. Shiny radiator, just like mine.

If putting a fan close to the socket dropped the temps, then I would imagine your baseline heatsink/fan temps were a little off, meaning that the fan kept the reported temp a couple or more degrees lower than it really was. Watercooling shows actual temp without the added airflow, so it is more accurate.

Keep in mind that mid-high 30s are decent temps in the summer when the ambient temps are pretty high, so those temps are probably about right for the setup. Shortening the tubing will lower temps, but unless you really dont want an internal setup (why the hell not anyways...?) then there really isnt much you can do.

Other than super long tubing length it also looks like you added WAY too much of the zerex coolant...did you put the whole bottle in that loop man?
 
i was told that it should be 1/10 of the mix... and it is. I used about half a gallon of distilled water and 4oz of super coolant.. soo...
 
That's the right mix of Zerex, so it's not a problem.

Unless you are checking the mounting pressure and thermal paste application, the only thing left is the tubing. How many times have you pulled the block off and remounted with new thermal paste? Maybe you should try it one more time, making sure the block makes even and firm contact with the core. If the temps don't change, then I think to see some results, you are going to have to wait for winter or shorten the tubes up...Maybe even consider a (gasp!) internal setup.

well i got the gigabyte coming in tommorow as well.. .gotta choose between the gigabyte or switching to the neo2.. i dont wanna wait though...gotta sell one either way
 
I'm not sure If I'm seeing this right, but it looks to me like the reservior is on the outlet side of the pump. If thats the case, I agree with the configuration issues these guys are pointing out. With the reservior mounted on the outlet side of the pump and so high up, your forcing the pump to work against gravity. (weight of the water in the reservior) In a closed loop with no reservior, syphon action should eliminate any problems with gravity, but not when you have a large volume of water (reservior) on the outlet side. The reservior should be on the feed side so that gravity actually helps to feed the pump.

I think the resivour is on the feed side...

and this is kinda a long shot, but another person was complaining that his temps were high, and turned out his water block wasnt put on tight enough. Check to see how good your block is, and what kind of grease are you using between the block and cpu?
 
If you're rebuilding anyway, I'd get the 77 boneville core and move your 2 120 mm fans onto it. I run the same pump and block, same length of tubing (external setup) and get good flowrates and temperatures. One suggestion to test your flow: Put the pump into a 5 gal bucket of water and measure the throughput by filling gallon jars. I get about 1.8 gpm from my setup (with an additional Maze 4 block in the system).
