Speaking as someone who has once assembled a system containing two CD-ROM drives, one FDD, and four HDDs, I can state with certainty that 'cable origami' is the only way to go with PATA. Rounded cables, even if you pretend that they're actually not a threat to your data's integrity, are actually far harder to handle, because they're less easy to route.

Beats me, Demia2 has only had 2 DVDRW, one IDEzip100, one FDD, ten u160SCSI :D...

who needs to route them??? Just lay them wherever they want to go like the SATA cables are done above... and as you can see ive built monster systems myself and that's just one example of many ive done... inf only I had a picture of TAZ...

~EDIT~ my point,. which you seemed to miss, to posting my server, was that there is plenty of space whether I folded or used rounded cables for sATA or pATA (flat or round) cables, even eight drives even in that small of a case if properly cared for.

there are definately high quality rounded IDE cables available
its just that the vast majority arent :p

Anyways, if you use rounded cables I think pata can be just as good as sata for airflow... with none of the cable falling out issues, and price is lower too... thats why I'm running it in my server, the price thing. to be honest its a double whammy for me cuz I had pATA controller on the board and I would have to spend $20 more for a sATA controller, then another $3.50 ea for a sATA cable... well you see where I am going...

Love to see the "after" picts, air flow looks great. Nice looking overall setup.
 
Well, decided I'd pull the trigger. Two Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 160GB SATA2 drives on order for my main system. I'd go for the 7200.8 200GB's if I could find them reasonably, but nobody has them and prices are listed at a hundred bucks more apiece, and $100 for 40GB just isn't worth it.

I think that RAID-0 and BACKUP don't belong together in this context. RAID-0 is not a backup solution.

Id check the connectors to see if they where different or had some sort of auxillary ground

this is quite an old thread, shielded internal cables are far more common now
it gets alot of interest but is more an issue to be aware of than something to be actively concerned about ;)

I know, but damn if it didn't grab my attention. Besides, with a new rig being built, I want max performance if I can squeeze it.

I was thinking something like these:

I use TrippLite internal cables (yep, they have SATA cables too), you can get them in multiple lengths, with standard or right-angle connectors, and they're all EMI/RFI shielded.

So far I've been buying them from http://www.nextwarehouse.com , you have to know the model numbers (available at http://www.tripplite.com) as their information is spotty, but I've had good luck, the prices are very reasonable, and the cheapest grade of shipping is free, which makes them less expensive than most places who charge slightly less for the cables, and then a bundle for shipping.

Anyone know where I can get some 6-8" shielded SATA cables?
 
Addonics has some external SATA cables here, but it looks like they should work for any application. They are shielded.

 
yes - cool thread. this could have helped me solve a VERY strange slow down which happened right around the time I upgraded to a 19' LCD, which is right next to the machine with the problem... Here's a pic -

the slim puple cable is one of my drive's cables... no more than 10" from the side of the LCD, and resting on a 120mm fan!
