So after spending a nice hunk of change trying to cool things down, I'd figure I would ask here.

Specs:

San Diego 3700+ @ stock
MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI
36GB Raptor
250GB Maxtor
1xeVGA 6800GT
1024 MB (2x512) OCZ Platinum El Rev 2.
OCZ Powerstream 520

With my stock HSF, I was seeing idle temperatures of ~47-48C. I then replaced the stock heatsink with the heatsink my friend had for his X2, which pushed temps down to about 45C. After that, I decided to just get the XP-120 w/ 120 mm medium speed panaflo and be done with it. I put it on, idle temps are now at about 42C (~46 load). Figuring it was an airflow problem, I replaced all the fans in my Lian-Li PC-60 with 80mm medium speed panaflos, which dropped the temps another 2C (now at 40C idle/43 load). The northbridge reads at 37C, and the drives at 30C and 32C. I've reseated the XP-120 about 5 times now, replacing the AS5 (small dab in the middle), and then the most recent attempt was with ceramique. Ceramique seemed to be working the best for me. Am I just being Unrealistic? With the sides of the case off, I idle at about 36C. Ideas? I see people posting idle temps below 30 with similiar setups, and I cant fathom how they are doing it. My room is at about 27C. The next thing I'm thinking about doing is modding the bottom of the case to take a 120mm fan w/ some nice coasters. My wire management is excellent and it certainly isnt the problem.
 
Not alot wrong with those temps IMO. Dont forget that pretty much ALL mothebroards reports temp differently, so that could easily make a difference,
 
Idle temp is not a good indication... look at prime 95 temp and compare between HS. Heavily overclocked system benefit even more than stock setting as far as these heatsinks go.
 
I also posted my load temps. Regardless, my idle temps are higher than alot of peoples load temps.
 
I had an XP-120 before I turned to H20 cooling. I was very dissapointed with the XP and then I lapped it down to the copper and my temps dropped about 4~6 C.
 
Dude,

It's winter where I live and we're happy in room temps around 18C - 20C.

So my Idle temp is 28 - 29C and load is up to 38C.

So if your in a room around 27C then I'd expect your CPU to be around 9 or 10C higher at idle.


Idle temps in the 30's are fine as long as your loads don't get to high.
 
i have a very similiar rig to urs (look in my sig) and at 1.54v i idle at 34-35 degrees and load at 39-40 degrees...i dunno what could be the difference, maybe case airflow, but Lian Lis usually have good airflow

running at 1.7v 3.2c at 3.6 ghz and 65C full load no lapping and the cpu ihs was HORRIBLY machined, it looked EXACTLY like those book covers that you run your nails on and it makes a noise, and trying it it did that noise too :eek: what i have discovered is the preformance of the xp-120 is dependant on temperature, the heat pipes are aparently tuned for high temperature and they do not even turn on until ~36c

why the hell are you guys even worried about cpu temps under 55C just because a64s run cooler doesnt mean you have to run them cooler

18C isn't that cold. I've got a very dry house with low humidity and underfloor vented heating.

If your house is dry (low humidity) then it feels warmer at 18C than a humid house.

I still sit around in my shorts and tee shirt.
 
Yah I usually game in my underwear with a nice warm cozy blanket over me with a window open in the winter. Dont know why...I guess the cold makes me more aware or something like that..but thats just me.
