I want to buy the Warhammer 40k platinum series which includes Dawn of War, Dark Crusade and Winter Assault.

While doing some research, I stumbled upon Warhammer Mark of Chaos. At first I thought it was a new hybrid expansion, but after looking it up on wikipedia briefly, it appears that Warhammer and Warhammer 40k are two different franchises or games.

Can someone explain what the difference is between both Warhammer and Warhammer 40k, and the difference between the two sets of games? Which is worth getting now?

Warhammer - Fantasy (eg. Medieval, but with magic, orks, mutants, etc)

Warhammer 40k - 38'000 (I think?) years in the future. Still has orks, mutants, etc, but also shiny tech.

Never played Mark of Chaos, but based on reviews it seems rather mediocre. I'd get the 40k pack instead.

Mark of Chaos wasnt that great. DOW is old but still pretty decent. Guess it depends on if you want sci fi or fantasy too.

warhammer exists in 2 forms.
fantasy and the 40,000 years later version.

same idea, different time periods and slightly different factions.

Mark of Chaos is in essence Warhammer: Total War

the prequels are "shadow of the horned rat" and "dark omen" both of which follow the grudgebringers mercenary company and how they save the empire. (give the games some validity and continuity)

i liked them both.

but yes, if you are looking for an RTS like starcraft, buy the 40,000.
if your more into Total War, then you might like the fantasy version.

Mark of CHaos was nothing like total war. It was rather "run of the mil" and lacked the great gameplay. Also lacked that "warhammer" feel that Dawn of War captured. Playing COmpany of Heroes gives me a boner for what MIGHT come with Dawn of War 2. I'd also love to see them do a fantasy warhammer game. Properly.

Mark of Chaos was pretty bad all in all, I couldn't be bothered to ever finish the single player campaigns, and multiplayer was horribly broken. Seemed to only exist to grab up fan dollars.
I would definitely recommend DoW over it.
