well we missed several days here so Im changin the title to:

Beat the alternative, freeware whenever I felt like updating it

and drum roll please........
Security Enhanced Linux

a special treat today, instead of software, a free OS :p

First released to the public in January 2001, Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is a research project from the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) that seeks to enhance the open source Linux kernel: to provide greater protection against corruption; to prevent the bypassing of application security procedures; and to mitigate the destruction caused by malicious or defective applications.

Normal Linux vs. SELinux
Normal Linux system security relies on the kernel and the dependencies created through the setuid/setgid binaries. Under the conventional security mechanism, an exploit of a flaw with any privileged application, configuration, or process running usually leads to a total system compromise. This problem is consistent with most modern operating systems due to their complexity and interoperability with other applications.

SELinux relies solely on the kernel and the security configuration policy. Once you configure the security system correctly, improper application configuration or exploits of flawed applications and daemons will only result in compromising the user program and its system daemons. The security of other user programs and daemons remains intact, along with the underlying security system structure.

In simpler terms: No single application configuration flaw or exploit can result in a total system compromise.

Installing SELinux
The SELinux kernel, utilities, daemon/utility patches, and documentation are available for download from the Security-Enhanced Linux Web site. You must have an existing Linux system to compile your new kernel and access to unmodified system packages.
the above is from TechRepublic subscription probably required, but its free and relatively painless

Disclaimer not applicable today

RegistryProt 2.0

Lockdown your registry :D You are prompted to allow or disallow any changes, great for many Trojans, quite a few Spyware infections, and even programs you dont want to autostart.
(If you pay attention to the keys)

RegistryProt is a 100% free, standalone, compact, low-level realtime registry monitor and protector, that adds another dimension to Windows security and intrusion detection. By monitoring important locations and keys in the Windows system registry, RegistryProt will alert whenever a key is added or changed, and then give the option of accepting the key change, reverting back to the original key setting, or deleting the key.

RegistryProt's most useful attribute is that it will detect the vast majority of trojans at the exact moment that they infect/install themselves into your system, and as such provides a new dimension in trojan and intrusion detection.

RegistryProt is a very small, yet powerful and efficient low-level monitoring program that would go well along side your favourite security applications.

Mike Lin's MCL

they say the commandline seperates the pros from the enthusiasts, this will encourage that development, I have it in my startup at boot, a simple floating window for your desktop ;)

MCL is a command line utility that allows you to run programs quickly and easily by typing the commands. Why is this useful? If you...

...are a really fast typer, and tired of Windows' inefficiency.
...are an old UNIX junkie, and used to the command line way of doing things
...hate the consistently idiot-proof way Windows works
then MCL is for you!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MCL is 100% freeware! It was written in C++ by Mike Lin. It is not dependent on VB, MFC, or any other runtime DLLs. It has low memory usage, small download size, and high performance. Some of its nifty features include:

AutoComplete - finishes your commands for you
Rollup - compresses the window in a little bar, saving you screen space
Command history - remembers up to 100 of your previously used commands
Hotkey - One key combination anywhere in Windows and MCL is activated
Macros - special commands that let you quickly execute one or more other commands
Ability to execute not only programs, but DOS commands, Explorer, and URLs.
Plug-ins - allows any developer to extend MCL's capabilities
MCL was designed from the ground up to be convenient, out of the way, and easy to use. It can make using Windows a much less annoying experience!

see link for screenshots, and lots of plugins including controlling WinAmp, the shutdown, recycle bin, recent documents, macros, and the ability to browse for a file w\ MCL, and more

AnalogX's CookieWall v1.01
I know for some of you the meer mention of cookies, transforms you into a slavering Homer Sinmpson with shades of Sesame Steet
Coooookieeeee
however if you like to choose which cookies youll eat and which you wont (and then automate the process next time you visit), cookiewall is for you. ;)

Online privacy is a big deal these days, with huge companies being formed every month to both protect and exploit information gathered about you. By far the most common method used to track individuals on the Internet is the 'Cookie', a small file stored on your machine with information provided by a website... While the majority of the websites out there use this tool as it was intended, more and more are exploiting it in ways that were never intended - that's where AnalogX CookieWall comes in.
AnalogX CookieWall allows you to quickly and easily decide which cookies can stay on your system, and which cookies should go - once you let CookieWall know which ones are unwelcome, it does the rest. CookieWall can be configured to delete cookies as soon as they arrive, to notify you of any new ones, or just que them up for you to check out at a later date.
CookieWall is currently only compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer or derived versions (such as NeoPlanet); Netscape support should be available in the near future.

I run this ap at startup and have it set to prompt, on occassion it will shift your focus when your typing a response, asking you if you want the cookie, if that bothers you, select a different setting.
Ive turned it into a game, Kill the cookie :p

You have three options in the prompt setting, Kill, Eat and temporarily accept. (well they have slightly different names)

you really dont realize exactly how many of these suckers get stuffed on your system from day to day until you run an ap like this.

Add/Remove Pro v. 2.08
this is one of those rare exceptions, there is a small ad on the GUI of this ap, for the software developer, but its not spyware

displays the entries in the Add/Remove Programs list of Windows Registry, checks if each is valid, and uninstalls the selected program or removes the entry from the list. < Official description

Well thats pretty straight forward, and so is this ap for the most part, however it also has a few nice advanced features, like:

Finder Tab, select a program with a broken link and use the finder to see if a file in the uninstall string, this is here because, some aps dont report correctly, so its a good idea to check to see if the uninstall string is actually there or not before you delete the link.

Change Uninstall String
"Sometimes a link is bad because the program has changed locations or because a tempoary directory with the uninstall information was deleted. This will keep the program from being uninstalled." If the uninstall information exisits in another loaction on your compter you can use this to change the uninstall string.

Backup & Restore
automatically backups before you delete and gives you the option to restore

Displays all Uninstall Strings,
even those that windows doesnt want you to see

Maybe no one is like me, but you should see my Windows Add/Remove Programs list. It is full of
broken links. The only way to remove them is to open up the Registry and try to figure out where the
Uninstall entries are. I'm too lazy to do this more than once a year, so I wrote Add/Remove Pro.
Just run Add/Remove Pro and it will show you which links are bad. Press the Remove Entry button to
remove the entry. If you would like to uninstall a program, press the Uninstall Program button.

Digi-Info

Alot of folks dont realize there is more information in a basic jpeg than just the picture itself ;)

There's quite a bit of hidden information in pictures taken with your Digital Camera and Digi-Info will extract that info so you can view and save it. Types of information include Camera make and model, Orientation, Resolution, Exposure Time, Date, Time, Shutter Speed, Aperture Value, Subject Distance, Metering Mode, Light Source, Flash on/off, Focal Length, Width, and Height, among others. Works with most major cameras.

WhoLockMe

Great little Windows Explorer Shell Extention (NT\W2K\XP only)
that will allow you to find out which aps have their hooks into a file you cant seem to delete, so you can close them

Have you ever bored by this Windows message : "Error Deleting File or Folder, ... There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use.", when you try to delete, move or rename a file ?

WhoLockMe is a little extension for your Microsoft Explorer. It permeets you to list all the process locking your selected file.

This freeware is an beta version, it Doesn't work on Win9x or WinMe

Ive never had any issues with it (even though its a beta, and I run alot of other aps) and more often than not allows me to close the processes identified and delete the file. Though you may need to boot to safe mode or a command prompt for really stubborn files ;)

Drop To DOS
another shell extention to Windows Explorer
The commandline is a very powerful tool, one that many find intimidating, largely because of navgation, this solves that handily
it add the option for you to Right Click on a file or folder in My Computer or Windows Explorer, and "Drop to DOS" and presto you are at a command prompt for that file\folder ;)

With Drop to DOS, you can right click on any folder and choose the Drop to DOS option to take to you a command prompt within that folder. Works with Win9x/WinME/WinNT/2K/XP

and to go with it, Bookmark these links

common XP command line utilities ( good starting list)
try shutting down from the commandline, or get a list of your drivers, soon it will be second nature.

Amaze your friends with your L33t admin skilz :p

FileChecker v1.7
there is alot of malware out there hard coded to disable AntiVirus or Trojan Scanners, Circumvent Firewalls and still remain invisible

The Purpose of FileChecker:
-To watch important system files for changes, modifications, or tampering (by malicious programs).
-To watch Anti-Virus program files, Anti-Trojan program files, anti-spyware program files, firewall files, etc. for tampering by rogue programs, and to notify if such action takes place.
-Now, FileChecker can log these events to the NT event log, and can run as a Windows service (for greater security).
-You can also use SMTP (e-mail) alerting, to send important information on file changes and deletions to any e-mail address

General Featues
-Lets you specify files to watch.
-Notifies (if you want) and logs if changes/modifications/deletions/tamperings occur to the files you have selected.
-Runs in the background - can be minimized to the system tray for convenience.
-Is very small, and takes up very little memory.
-Can save your watch list and scan time preferences.
-Can start up minimized to the system tray, and begin watching your files silently.
-Can compute cryptographic hashes of files (checksums)!
-Has new installer program that should install extraneous files that were missing on some users’ computers.
-Added configuarble pop-up notification options (you can select to have pop ups for all detected changes, just for checksums, just for file deletions, combinations of those, etc.)
-Log file format changed to add date and time for events.
-Log file can now be set up to export to a text file (it is recommended you configure the log file to be placed in a directory OTHER than your FileChecker install directory).
-Watch-list is now stored in ENCRYPTED format (you can also change your current watch-list to encrypted format with a click of a button).
-Other configuration information (such as location of log file) is stored in ENCRYPTED format.
-You can select only certain files on your watch-list to be checksummed.
-Help file added.
-Password Protection
-Optional installation as a Windows Service (adds to the security!)

FileTargets 1.4.0
This is a very handy little shell extention (RClick on a folder\file for the drop down menu and filetarget is there) ;)

FileTargets is a shell context menu extension that adds a sub-menu with all your favorite folder names to the context-menu of all files and folders in your system so you can copy/move selected files to pre-defined, most used folders with the click of a mouse. FileTargets menu is similar to the standard SendTo menu but is much more advanced since it allows you to create subgroups, automatically add new folders, copy file path names and much more.

Because a picture is worth thousands of words, please see the screenshot.

Some features:

Copy/move files with only 2 clicks!
Make subgroups to group your target folders
If the folder of interest is not listed in the submenu you can use the Browse for Folder functionality to pick up new folder on the fly
Special configuration window lets you add/arrange/remove folders from the menu with ease
Copy filename/path of selected file(s) to the clipboard

Important! This program requires the following installation password (case sensitive): ILikeMoonSoftware

get used to using this and youll wonder how you ever got along without it ;)

Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel

Sick of manually editing the registry to get rid of all those utilities that start by defualt and, that you only use occassionally?
Personally I dont need my scanner software to load at every statup, if I want to use it I'll start it

Another fine peice of freeware from Mike Lin ;)

Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple to use and, like all my programs, is very small and won't burden your system. A valuable tool for system administrators!

HTTrack Website Copier

This little baby will just suck down a website in no time :p

HTTrack is a free (GPL, libre/free software) and easy-to-use offline browser utility.

It allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site's relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the "mirrored" website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system.

WinHTTrack is the Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP release of HTTrack, and WebHTTrack the Linux/Unix/BSD release. See the download page.

I use this ap quite alot, and is by far the best Ive found

Keynote

this ap has so many features I still havent tried half of them :p

Keynote is a flexible, multi-featured tabbed notebook, based on Windows standard RichEdit control. It's always accessible with a single keypress, even if you work in another application. Take a look at the screenshots page.

The basic idea in KeyNote is that you can include many separate notes within a single file. This means that you do not need to open several files - for most purposes it is enough to create only one file and hold all your notes inside it. With the addition of the tree-type notes, you now have a three-dimensional notebook: many notes within one file and a multi-level, nested pages within a single note. Optionally, KeyNote can encrypt your data securely using the Blowfish or Idea algorithms. Keynote's interface and behavior are extremely configurable.

KeyNote was written to overcome major limitations in other popular information managers, both free and shareware. KeyNote is the only information manager that offers a combination of simple and tree-type notes, rich text editor, ability to mix freely many notes of different types in a single file and secure encryption. This makes KeyNote the most flexible and one of the most powerful applications of this kind currently available. Some functions, such as "virtual nodes", per-file configuration settings, multiple backups or WordWeb integration are unique and, to my knowledge, not supported by any other notebook program, freeware or shareware.

With powerful text formatting capabilities, easily navigable interface and additional features such as styles, macros, plugins, and templates, KeyNote is has become the favorite note keeper, diary, outliner, knowledge base and information manager for thousands of users.

Examples of use:
personal information management
personal diary or journal
to-do items
scratchpad for quick notes and ideas
writing and structuring small articles or larger documents
Creating and storing electronic texts (easily structure chapters or sections)
outlines, projects
project documentation
reports
recipes
personal contacts (addresses, telephone numbers)
accounts, passwords, PIN numbers (remember to encrypt the file!)
Internet bookmarks (clickable hyperlinks)
all kinds of lists! If you collect books, CDs, DVDs, or just your favorite quotes or jokes, KeyNote makes it easy to store them in one place and search through them quickly.
email archives (you can use the separate, free KNTConvert utility to import your email archives into a KeyNote file)
archiving documents, such as articles downloaded from the Internet or local files
templates for creating documents with a standard format
viewing log files (use virtual nodes to view log files without having to open each file separately)
for teachers: class notes, student attendance and assessment notes
for programmers: KeyNote is great for storing and searching through source code archives

Glass2k

Glass2k is a small little program that allows Windows 2000/XP users to make any window transparent. Right-click on any window or press the keyboard shortcuts (Control + Shift + [0-9]) to make any window transparent. It's that simple.

The new stable beta version remembers each window's transparency settings, makes taskbar transparency possible, allows you to keep any window on top, loads on Windows startup etc.

"Glass2k runs in the systray and handles turning on any window's transparency. I'm not too sure about the speed in W2k, but in XP w/ the newest Nvidia drivers and a somewhat recent video card, it's hardware accelerated, and yes, you should be drooling." - SlashDot.org

HijackThis

once you use this ap a few times and get to recognize the valid entries, it makes getting rid of that pesky spyware that much easier, will eject what Spybot search & Destroy or Adaware cant.

HijackThis examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. These are areas which are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. It's up to you to decide what should be removed. Some items are perfectly fine. You should not remove them. Never remove everything. Doing that could leave you with missing items needed to run legitimate programs and add-ins. This Page will help you work with the Experts to clean up your system. For those of you needing instructions on how to Copy and Paste the contents of a text file into a Forum Post, please look at the Table of Contents. A link to the instructions is included.

see link for more specific info, screenshots and download locations
a few of which (including the direct download) are currently offline, it would not suprise me one bit if they are getting targeted with DDOS attacks, you can also google: hijack this mirror or hijackthis mirror for additional download locations, as always, scan all your downloads and employ hash checking if available

Here you go Paint.Net 2.5 it's free.

Description:

Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows XP or 2000. Paint.NET is jointly developed at Washington State University with additional help from Microsoft, and is meant to be a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with all Windows operating systems.

The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with GDI+ extensions.

Paint.NET has many of the powerful features that expensive commercial applications have, including the ability to use layers.

This is the second semester that Paint.NET has been a project at Washington State University, and we have the goal of adding as much functionality as expensive commercial applications provide, but of course, for free!

[HashOnClick] - "A program to calculate the CRC-32, MD5, or SHA-1 hash value for a file. It is implemented as a shell extension, i.e. right-click on a file, in Windows Explorer, to calculate the hash value for a file. It's that simple!"

[SketchUP] - Ameteur 3D Modelling Application

[Linux Live Game Project] - How many games can you fit on one Live Linux Distro?

Also great to have are some [portable] versions of our favorite applications, such as FireFox, OpenOffice, AbiWord, FileZilla, Thunderbird, GAIM, Gimp, ClamWin, NVU, XAMPP...

And for those who don't know what we mean by portable and don't remember the days of DOS, it means you can copy it to removable media, such as a USB drive, and it will run from that media without requiring installation. Take it, and everything you do to it, with you everywhere you go.

Also the last [101 Free Games] printed in CGW, with hyperlinks (some of which are NOT free, but listed as integrity to the list but noted).

I recently started a new [website] for free-types of data, but the name skeered everybody here away, but not before the flogging...

[The White Chamber] - A 2D Adventure game that is much like Maniac Mansion interface and genre-wise, but a game all its own to be sure. This creepy and wild adventure will keep you interested, and will proabably stump you many times over. If you're sensitive to carrying around body parts in your backpack, this game is not for you.

[Maniac Mansion] - Since I mentioned it. Though posted in these forums before, you know how easy it is to miss a thread in the forums. This is a PC port of the classic.
