Anyone else playing War Thunder?

I've been playing it for a few weeks now, and despite never really being into flight sims, I'm loving it. It looks and plays better than many $60 games.

It's free to play but from what I've seen it isn't so in your face on microtransactions as most other games, and in fact all buying gold will do for you is get you into higher level aircraft faster, which then puts you into higher level matches so it sort of balances out (or will once the matchmaker is refined.)

For an idea of how it all works check out some of videos by Jingles

I played it for a couple hours and came to the conclusion that i need to train in a proper flight sim before trying to do dog fights

does this have anything on flightgear?

Not that I know of.

Well I've heard that realistic flight modes can be insanely complex, but the arcade mode that I've played you wont need to, the biggest thing is to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the aircraft your flying.

For example, the Russian reserve aircraft have some of the best turn radius in the game, and don't drop the way some other aircraft do, so when flying them it's best to stay very low and get the enemy aircraft to come down to you

Another example is the Beaufighter, it's an awesome aircraft and will shred anything it gets it's cannons on, but it handles like a bus drives on glare ice so actually getting the cannons on something can be difficult. Also while it's fast it accelerates extremely slow so once your speed drops your in deep trouble if there are any enemy aircraft in range of you (and everyone not flying them hates them, so if you get into trouble they will rush to take advantage of it.)

Finally, beware of tail/waist gunners as even a single lucky shot can kills your engine, or even your pilot (AI gunners aren't great, but the pilot of the other plane can take control of the gunner and do much better. I've got more then a few enemy planes that way.)

Not necessarily... I took the in-game tutorial (about 30min) and after that joined the server, and had three kills the very first game. I just loaded it up on my PC three days ago, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. The maps are great, and there will be a butt-load more once they finish open beta. The flight controls are VERY easy even with mouse+keyboard combo. The server match-making system is really good. You'll never play anybody that's more than one level above of below you. So you'll never be totally outgunned. Hell I'm still flying a lowly Russian I-15 and have taken on and beat Spitfires....!!! Now, that's satisfying! I'm dropping BF3 all-together, as the lack it's nothing but a clusterfuck of bad netcode... WarThunder is my game of choice now.. And it's FREAKING free!!!!

Edit:
Well, watched the Youtube vids, and it seems like the guy is flying a "reserve" (lowest of the low) plane and playing matches with tier 3~5 planes. But I guess he chose that server. Whenever I play, I'm never going against planes that much giher then me, but then again I let the game pick a server for me.... Still, very fun game. And if I decide to drop some $$$ into it, it still will be much more rewarding then any other $60 game I've paid for in the past... Especially multi-player.

From what I been reading of it the MM is not working well at this point. People who have played WoWP though say WT is way better. Supposedly a lot of fun but its still a work in progress.

The tutorial is awesome. I'm trying to play in cockpit view and dive bomb cargo ships. I've only managed to land twice, in an hour and a half, on an aircraft carrier. Both times were essentially lucky crash landings.

The same company has a game called Star Conflict, which I am downloading:

War Thunder is far and above World of Warplanes it's not even funny. I love Wargaming.net and WoT, but WoW just doesn't feel right nor does it fly right. War Thunder is made by the same guys who did Wings of Prey which was a stellar WWII flight sim. This game plays just like it except a little more simple and the MP is sooo fun. I like it so much I am gonna throw some money at it next week to get premium. I am still trying to figure out all of the other stuff though, I think I got a handle on the skill system, at least I hope.

MM definitely spreads ranks out quite a bit. I started getting into matches with jets at only rank 6, and I think most jets are around rank 17.

I was up till 3 am playing this. Check out the 1 minute trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BWqTXoNjtQ

I'm flying a bomber plane carrying 4 x 100 Kg bombs and I have an AI sitting in the turret gunnery seat. We had a great bombing run last night and using some circling and climbing manoeuvres, my partner shot down a couple of bogeys. I developed a fuel leak and we had to fly to the landing strip, for repairs.

I started playing this last night and it's a blast, not to mention for a free to play game it has some stunning graphics imo.

It is a HUGE pita to land on a carrier though, the way the camera works you can't relaly see how level you are compared to the deck of the plane until it's too late to really pull up if you're too low or get low if you're too high.

Downloaded this the other night, thanks to this thread. I spent a lot of time on World of Tanks. I am in the closed beta for WoWP and wasn't nearly as impressed with that as I am with War Thunder. I really like this game.

Another great thing about this game; super low graphic card requirements. My roommate is playing it on a i5 (3.6Ghz) with a GTS250 at 1080p with medium to high settings, and it rarely drops below 50fps... Pretty damn amazing considering the detail of the maps and planes in this game...

Yea, I was impressed as well. It works pretty awesome in Eyefinity as well, but there is some weird glitching on the right monitor but my drivers are out of date, want to try updating them to see if it helps any.

wow this looks awsome. Been waiting for a nice fighter game. Haven't played a combat flight game since IL2 Sturmovik.

Can anyone recommend a budget flightstick? Sold my microsoft sidewinder 2 force feedback pro and regret it. They're hard to come by

lol the Ms Sidewinder force feedback is sitll considered one of the best joysticks out there, I tried to find one when I got cliffs of dover a year or so ago and had no luck.

When you say budget, do you mean < 100, or like 50<? Cause there are some that go 300+.

The CH fighterstick is one of the best <100'ish joysticks you will find, well built , good precision, but it has no twist to it for rudder control like many other joysticks (It's great if you plan to get rudder pedals).

A lot of people get Saitek joysticks on a budget, they are cheap, look fancy, but precision isn't all that great on them.

Is KB/M preferred or joystick? I own the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick and never get to use it except in HAWX :p

If you want to do anything other than the basic random pub matches, you'll need a joystick. Keyboard and mouse is stupid simple in this game though since the game does most of the flying for you.

I sold my sidewinder for a measly $15 few years ago after I stopped playing IL2. KICKING MYSELF. Cheaper is better. I'm going to scavenge a sidewinder again somehow

This game is amazing.

It alone is making me want to purchase a flight stick and I have not owned one since Mech Warrior.

The first one!

The game is fucking tremendous. The control is flawless. The graphics are stunning. The ability to jump in and play is remarkable.

And I normally dislike flight sims...but this title is in-fucking-credible.

Name is TheStiletto in-game. I've got a premium account so if you'd like to get into an 8-person squad, add me as a contact.

Out of curiosity which nation are you guys finding having the best advancement and the most fun with? I hear the Russian line is currently somewhat OPed and easiest to get into and the German line the hardest at this point in time.

I've been trying to rank up on the American side, mainly because I want to get a p51 mustang asap, it's been a bit slow going though.

My only negative thing though is how long some aircraft take to repair, etc. Some can take days, what's the point of not allowing people to play planes they've unlocked like that?

It feels like one of those cheap facebook games that use that to pad it out and make you "spam" friends to get resources faster, it'd be more fun if it didn't take that long.

What level are you?

My air craft have never not been 100% durability, I didnt even think this was a problem...

I am level 7

The most fun for me is the Americans, being the most historically familiar with them. Advancement is slow, but I've been toying with the idea of buying Premium with the 250 starting Gold Eagles. If you want to start advancing any quicker, you really are forced into buying Premium, such is F2P game.

Russians are by far the easiest and most OP nation to fly, and coincidentally, the most fun at the same time. Working on Germans too, haven't touched Brits or Japan. Going to start advancing out of the German 0-1 tiers but keep using the Russian reserve planes to grind lions with.

The American line is by far the most expensive nation to repair planes once you've used up your free repairs for a given plane. If you're going to play Americans at high ranks, you'll probably need Premium, be very very good, or take time to grind lions. If you put Crew Points into the Ground Service for repairs, if will reduce the time to repair for free, but I'm not sure how much it reduces it by.

Russian side seems to be the quickest to ramp up, and a little OPed compared to the rest, but what do you expect.. Damn Ruskies developed this game...;) I started with Russian planes and had lotsa fun, until I reached level 7. It's slow going from there. Decided to start from scratch with US planes, and the first 3~4 levels go by VERY quickly if you got basic keyboard+mouse coordination.. After level 5 things start to slow down, but that's most likely because you're starting to run into others with same level planes and you really have to start working for the points. Even though this game is silly easy to get into with a mouse+KB, I'm seeing where I'm may have to brake the piggy bank and jump into a joystick config... Also, the built in single missions (kinda co-op) are AWESOME at getting some flight time under your skin and getting used to controls for each plane without getting your ass shot to pieces. And you DO get XP's for it too... It's just a FUN, Fun, fuuuuuuun game...

Just incase anyone here wanted to collect and fly all the planes (was my future goal) then you're out of luck. The only two planes which are impossible to get is the TU-2 (closed Beta participants only, obviously over now) and the A-26C-45 (only for buying some shitty $2500 Russian laptop back in November 2012, not getting that one either) I was a little disappointed since that was kind of my goal. I hope in some shape or form they will be offered in the future.

Well if you can't get those two planes at all, then they don't really count towards getting all the planes, do they? They're exterior to the collection.

Transfer plane xp into ground mechanic repairs.

I've been having a blast with this game too. I decided to play the Americans and it's been a little bit of a learning curve, but I'm happy with them. I've heard the P-51 (which I was looking forward to as well) is kinda gimped ATM and it will be possibly patched soon. Otherwise, just got my airacobra and I think I'm being put into the higher tier matches now because I'm seeing new planes now and getting jacked up a lot lol.

Started playing the Russians today and wow...what a difference. Really got to choose your nation based on your play style I guess.

I haven't read up on where this game is headed (ie launch date?) and if there will be a wipe? Any ideas?

Welp, that 1.29 patch pretty much fucked the game right in the ass. Planes are harder to fly, easier to lose, harder to bomb with, and now give less money and xp for their rewards. In addition, the price of many planes has been shot into the stratosphere.

Pity. It is really well coded and runs great. Planes fly fairly horrible now? I just played it for the first time and I was flying the peashooter. I thought the plane just sucked bad bc it was a noob model but I guess the patch didn't help.
