Wanting to upgrade from Dell U3011 30" to 40-49" 4k TV

For my birthday coming up I've decided to replace my trusty u3011 that I've had for 5 years. After purchasing a Vizio M70 tv last year, I realize how washed out and dull the colors look like in comparison.

I'm looking to get a curved monitor 40-49" 4k TV to use as a monitor for gaming and just normal web browsing. I've been reading on the forums and alot of people recommend the Samsung KS8500 as the goto upgrade for the lowest input lag at 4k 60hz 4:4:4. But I'm worried 49" inch might be too big and 40-43inch would be the sweet spot.

Any reccomendations for a 40-43" curved 4k TV to use as a monitor? If not I'll probably just go with the KS8500 if I can get it for under 1k. I'm not looking for ultra-wide monitors. I'm used the the real estate of my dells 2560x1600 resolution and I think a 4k TV would be the best replacement for keeping the pixel ratio the same.

Here is a good option also. Around $300 now.

I am in same situation as you, but I decide to avoid TV segment altogether.

Too many many undocumented compromises in display tech and electronics. Large high resolution VA displays seem to be better alternative and more seem to on the way (via Samsung quantum led).

I am eying Phillips bdm4037uw , as discussed here.

I am really curious about that sweet 4000:1 static contrast ratio (as measured in reviews). While U3011 is very nice ips beast, I got 700:1 out of it after calibration. Its also quite hilarious that modern 40 inch display is lighter than U3011.

The Phillips bdm4037uw looks like a good monitor, but there are few things I don't like. I really don't like the stand that it comes with and I don't plan on wall mounting. I don't think they have a monitor arm for 40" monitors that attach to desks.

I think my best option right now is to get the Samsung UN43KU7500. 43" seems like it would be the sweet spot for me and there are not many options for a curved, 4k, TV in this size. I wish the 8500 variant came in this size or else I would buy that.

Thanks for the replies!

Really? I thought that the U3011 had the BEST colors of anything ive ever seen. I've had multiple displays over the years (21:9 34" 3440x1440, korean QHD, different 1080/1200p, TVs, etc)

It has superior color output yes, but it still has low sub 1000:1 contrast, as all ips displays have.

VA displays are not inherently equal or superior to high end ips panels, but newest ones have closed the gap significantly while offering one thing ips cannot -- high static contrast. Caveat emptor is that only few VA panels are this good, rest is just poor man's ips.

Had it been otherwise, I would have just ground my teeth and keep saving for that nice 4k igzo ultrasharp. Only true upgrade, dell oled, is sadly outside of my financial means.

If your really eying th 43ku7500 then go ahead and buy it,cause curved 4k tv's at that size are very few.

While they may look close on paper, there is quite the difference when it comes to real world between a TV and a true Monitor. I use the UP321Q and UP3216Q.

I'm using the dell up3216q and it's nice, but I'm really looking forward to something that has the same responsiveness and motion handling as the dell but in a larger 40" size, that would be really cool

Have you tried the 43" Dell?

I'm not sure if woled (LG?) and samoled (samsung?) oled tv panels are worth it.

New dell oled monitor seems to be much better option given current prices.

Reference data for current best in class alternative to U3011:

Dell U3011 - detailed review

Dell UP3214Q/UP3216Q - detailed review of older model
  • IGZO panel
  • ips-like and superiour color reproduction ( 99,5% of AdobeRGB )
  • 3840 x 2160 @ 31,5 inches
  • 700-800:1 measured static contrast ratio (dell claims 1000:1)
  • PWM unfortunately, may be absent in newer model
  • average 11ms response time (dell claims 8ms)
  • 60Hz , what did you expect?
  • ~~ 1300 USD
Dell UP3017Q (OLED) - no review as of yet, all data from dell
  • real oled :), no woled and similar
  • 100% Adobe RGB, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec. 709, 97.5% DCI-P3 and 85.8% Rec. 2020 :)
  • 3840 x 2160 @ 30 inches
  • variable brightness depending on overall display activity ( display load ) 300cd@1%load to 120cd@100%load
  • hence static contrast ratio between 600 000:1 to 200 000:1
  • 0.09 ms response time
  • 60Hz as expected
  • ~~3500 USD
Proposed cheap alternative/supplemental display:

Phillips bdm4037uw - no review from tftcentral, only older variant
  • VA display
  • inferior color reproduction, at least 100% sRGB confirmed, rest unknown at this time
  • 3,840 x 2,160 @ 40 inches , slightly curved
  • 3500+:1 measured contrast ration, spikes to 4500:1 at minimal brightness
  • glossy surface
  • 60 Hz
  • ~~ 1000 USD
  • CAVEAT - possible strong ghosting issue, as mentioned in amazon customer review here. Will disqualify monitor if it true.
