Hey all,

I have a pen 2.4c OC to 3.0 that has a runing temp at 27cel no load atm and the case temp is 44c. Which is all fine and dandy excpet to do that i have (over kill) four 6krpm fans running and a thermalright 90 with a 90 mm fan on it, aslo 6k rpm. And it sounds like a freakin chopper lol. Recently i have been gaming less and but am watching alot of dvds and you can imagine how that would be anoying to have a helocopter sound in the backround of all your movies lol. So i wanna go silent with the fans but dont want to have to tone down the OC. I was looking on Sidewindercomputers.com and they have several brands of silent fans and i was wondering what your guys take on the brands were whats better or worse and whats the best one to replace my CPU fan with and still get nuff cooling to maintain the OC.

Depends on the size of fan, really.

Cruise around SPCR and see what you can find.
 
Since temps are fine, could also consider throwing in a fan controller to just turn the fans down when you watch a dvd, and crank them back up when you're gaming or doing something else that'll increase the temps significantly.
 
i have a fan controll on all but the cpu fan and they are set to lowest lol when i turn them up i cant be in the same room its so loud lol

i been reading some other post and am thinking bout 120mm fans duno if they would fit even if i cut them into the lian li. all the case fans atm are 80 mm the cpu is 90 and they are the deep ones 38mm or whatever it is there thick. i have seen 2.4c run 3.0 with factory block/fan on it so i think if i get another 90mm or even upgrade the block to the new thermalright that takes 120 that might still be more than enough to keep it at a decent temp, its so low now if it goes up it will just be regular operating temp. Anyone have any luck with one brand fan vs another for the silent ones?
 
ducting.....duct the hot air from your cpu directly out the case back. Also do this with your vidcard...then cap off any vents in the back that do not have exhaust fans in them.

The ideal cpu fan for this is either an 80 or 92mm model. a 92mm vantec stealth can be ducted to an wire grilled 80mm fan spot without any significant losses in performance.
 
ooOoOo i like that idea mustang!!! sounds like a real project! lol i like those im gunna look up ducting kits and look at those 92mm stealth fans thats an awsome idea! /awsome excuse to put somthing new and interesting in my computer lol
 
About the best ducting kit I found was the "badong"....sadly it's a bit big to fit in my lian-li PC-7x series case...consider I was using a thermalright SI-97 and had 1/4" acoustic foam lining the case. Really, after teh fan adaptor, and the kit...that thing was really high up....I guess if you use a normal height heatsink, it will fit just fine.

I'm working on making my own CPU duct. Right now it will either be sheet aluminum, or taped shut modder's mesh (if I cannot find a decent aluminum sheet source).

If you are running less than 30CFM on your heatsink fan, then there's not goin to be much of a hit with any duct design that's even halfway decent.
