Ok, I've been needing a great space based flight sim and nothing has come close to Freespace (1&2). Are there any games on the horizon or has this genre just up and died. And no, I don't want to worry about the commanding the fleet, or trading crap to get better equipment. Just something like Freespace (there should have been a 3rd). If you've played it, you know what I mean.

I've been waiting for something as good as Freespace 2 for a long time, as well.

Freelancer wasn't terrible, but not anywhere close either.

I havn't heard of anything new coming, sadly :(

The only thing that comes to mind is freelancer, though it's not quite what your asking for.

You might also want to try X-wing:Alliance (though if you've placed Freespace, I'm guessing you already have.) Otherwise, keep hoping, but I haven't heard of anything remotely close coming out, period...

X2: The Threat was better than Freelancer IMO, but it still isn't what you're looking for.

These things are a bit cyclical, and it's been awhile since there was a Freespace or Wing Commander out there.

Yeah, I've tried Freelancer and X2. Nothing short of craptacular compared to Freespace or WC series (looked decent). I'd even put the original X-wing before those. X-Wing vs Tie Fighter was a good follow on, but Xwing:Alliance was nothing compared to the first two. Oh well.

the only thing that kept me from enjoying freelancer was the craptastic looking planets. I would've been much more engaged in if i could fight on top of a HUGE nice looking planet, like that level phobos in unreal torny

If you havent tried ( doubt ) go for wing commander prophecy.
its an old game but its very good.
i also do want to see more good space sims expecialy SW based.

I remember way back in the day when Microsoft made Space Simulator. I think that this would be AWESOME if they did an exact representation of our galaxy. Microsoft needs to make a new Space Simulator.

EvE online is a good one if you want an online one, but it takes awhile to actually get good at it and is just spaceship only. It's definitely not xwing vs. tie fighter if your looking for that type of game.

Freespace 1 & 2 were simply works of art. I don't think it's realistic to expect future space sim games to live up to those two.

I thought freelancer was pretty good. Good interface, decent story, combat was fun but repetitive. If you haven't beat it yet, I suggest you do. The game really starts to take off towards the middle/end.

Lucas Arts have to step up on the plate again really. Though I rate X-wing Alliance just as high as Tie Fighter and X-wing just a tad lower.

Outstanding work, Arkanian. Downloading and installing now.

....hmm...Arkanian....a reference to Petra Arkanian perhaps?
Orbiter is pretty good (but there is a steap learning curve) and there are a lot of addons for it.

I have a lot of fun playing it :)

Nope, Never heard of Petra Arkanian. Just Googled it though. Arkanian stems from Arkan which stems from Arkansas because that is where I was born and I go to the UofA. GO HOGS!

Last one that was somewhat decent was Starlancer. Pretty fun, but the last mission was damn near impossible. Freelancer was alright, but the whole mouse play thing really made it lame.

Independance War 2: Edge of Chaos.

Really cool game. And of course Privateer 2: The Darkening. I loved that game back in the day.

Another thing to try: Wing Commander Privateer Remake :)

I loved privateer. Right up until the moment i jumped into a new system, cargo hull FULL of illegal drugs and various other items of Contraband), and I am greeted by a Paradigm Carrier Capitol Ship, who immediately starts scanning my cargo hold. It was no contest. The wave of fighters coming out of that carrier was astonishing. More asonishing, however, was that I managed to take 3 of them out before they got me.

If I could find Independance War 2 I would buy it in a heartbeat but I cant find it anywhere.

Freespace 2 set the bar. That game is just amazing. I don't know if I will ever see another space sim that good. I would cry great tears of happiness should someone even get close.

I miss Wing Commander.

Damn EA.
agreed. WingCommander was a great series. Malcolm McDowell was perfect for Tolwyn.
WC.... you will be missed. *sniff*

I wish I knew more about the EA takeover of Origin b/c once EA got them they totally ran Origin into the dirt. :(

Anyone try that privateer remake?

Yep, and it's not too bad. A few bugs, but nothing that kills the game.

There are also quite a few other WC related fan mods out there, for those interested in revisiting the games. www.wcnews.com is a good site for info on them and places to download.

1. Can you even find freespace2 for a reasonable price anymore? (I typically see 90+)
2. Does it work on WinXP?

I stoped playing after WC Prof due to budget constrains (AKA my PC sucked and couldn't afford a better one).

1. Sort of - if you're looking for the original F:2, it's usually 35-50. If you're looking for the GOTY or 20th Anni edition, it's going to be 90+.
2. yes

PM me about it...

I bought Freespace 2 for $19.99 a while back, but I never got around to playing it...Other things came up. I think I'll dig it up and take it for a spin.

Freespace 2 is simply the best...Nothing like no visibility in a nebula while you're trying to take down a capital ship......and you're shooting your those swarm rockets and then see a flash of light and realize you're gonna die by one of those giant laser beams. Genious....I play it once every two or three years.

Too bad Volition and Interplay are gone.....

Freelancer and Independence War 2 are good in their own right. Starlancer (by M$) was also pretty good...especially when I bought it for $5.

If you're looking for something new and free, check out Babylon 5: I've found here. Quite a good game by a bunch of fans of the TV Series. Even if you haven't watched the series, the game in itself looks and plays pretty good - especially for being someone's free time project.
Check it out here: http://ifh.firstones.com/ Download weighs in a 220megs.
