Want to replace CRT to LCD

I do web development and digital photography work, so quality is a factor. I currently use a semi-good 17" Dell CRT that I bought from a friend.

However, due to desk space limitations (well, not really, I just want a nice looking LCD), I want an LCD to replace this old CRT.

I wouldn't mind getting a nice new Dell 18" LCD, but personally, I've always wanted the SGI 1600SW LCD (yes, I know I need a compatible card, I'll get that if I get the SGI). How is the quality on this monitor? Will it properly recreate colors as a good CRT will?

Or should I scrap that idea and get a current-production LCD to atleast match CRT quality?

Any help would be great.

Here are some specs on the 1600SW:

Dot Pitch: 0.23mm 110dpi
Resolution: 1600x1024
Color depth: 24-bit
Brightness:235cd/m^2

Based on the specs, it seems to compete good with the Dell 1800FP. It has a smaller dot pitch but slightly less brightness (the 1800 has 250cd/m^2). Not to mention the pimp factor of having a wide desktop on one LCD. Additionally, it's relatively cheap as well: $300 on eBay for a mint 2nd hand 1600SW vs. $500 for a refurbished 1800FP.

When you calibrate you monitor to IRE 0. if what you see is black in contrast to the rest of the screen. Will the colors be correct on the grey scale? Now remember you are calibrating to IRE 0.

The answer is an unfortunate no.

LCD are light and portable but they still have a ways to go before they can actaully reproduce black well. DLP and DILA/LCOS has made advancement in digtal blacks but they still have a lot of catching up to the old analog CRT's.
