maybe look for something used on auction? I mean, if all you want to do is word processing, I doubt you need that demanding of system specs... so maybe look for something a bit dated and used, since laptops can be costly.
If you get something older, and used, make sure you get something with decent battery life though. Since it's being transported back and forward to school, don't want it dying!

Well, if your going to use it for gaming using 3D games... you will end up spending a lot. Laptops geared for games are expensive. Even my laptop at 1.4Ghz, 512MB Ram, 40GB hard drive, with a ATI Radeon 64MB (Shared Graphics) isn't the greatest for gaming. Sure it'll run games like Quake III and UT2003 fine, but the frame rates aren't top notch, and my laptop cost a lot! So getting good performance in games with a value laptop might be a very hard thing to do. Anyone elses opinion on this?
Bottom line is I'd expect to pay around $800 for a bottom line laptop, and it won't play 3D games gracefully. However other types of less demanding 2D games should be fine, and so should older 3D games, not the latest ones.

Well, he did say basic. I just picked up a refurb from dells outlet page. I got a 2.4 celeron, 30gb hd, dvd/cdrw, 256 ddr for 589. You might check that out. They arent always that cheap but you can get lucky. I use mine for basic word processing, internet,and programming and it works just fine. Other than that, you might wait till back too school time if you can, Electronics stores always have good deals around that time on cheap laptops. As cheap as new laptops are, used ones usually arent a very good deal.

This is very true. I can't tell you the number of times people have been asking for recommendations and said "oh I might occasionally play games on it" . . . "occasional gaming" ability will raise the cost of any system, especially a laptop.
