Walmart with a good computer deal?

Lol, well if you look at the graphics card you'd see that it's not good... AT ALL.. thus.. no dont get that pos.

It's not that good of a deal, you should be able to get that same set-up at gateway for about 800+ bills.

then find something better. Ive looked everywhere, Im not going through one of these "customize it and let us build it places" since i dont wanna wait 3-4 weeks for them to do it. If that was the case id do it myself. I want retail PC this time around basically cause I reformat every few months and am sick of installing driver after driver, Retail it comes all on one restore CD and to me is worth the extra couple hundred bucks.

I build them for friends n stuff (doesn't everyone?) I'd build you a custom for $100 over cost (shipping and parts). Special [H] price :D.

true still pain in the ass though
Yeah, but it's also a pain in the ass using the system restore CDs, uninstalling junkware, UPDATING out-of-date drivers, having to reformat in the first place because OEM setups have all sorts of junk that you can't even find easily and that cause performance drop with age, etc. etc. etc....

Get someone to build it for you, and maybe have that person put together a restore disc set. Give about $100-$150 over cost.

You'll get a fast, stable computer (if the builder is competent), and you'll have a decent default configuration to begin with.

Retail can suck my ass.

As for boutiques, Dell and Gateway are NOT boutiques—they give some configuration flexibility, but they definitely slam systems out by the hundreds of thousands. Between Dell and Gateway, I would get the Dell—but a better bet is probably iBuyPower or ABSPC, especially if you want AMD.

Use Norton Ghost or a similar program then.

You're joking right? Compaq is a joke.

*shivers* I've always had a distaste for compaq.

Get a system from a decent online company, no large oems because they normally stink like a dead skunk that never took a bath.

Or you can see what local pc stores have on hand

I'd go with a place like Tiger Direct or the like. There's already a thread like this though, so check there for places.

Did comcrap stop sucking?

Anyway, don't buy from walmart (or sams club cuz walmart owns them. Walmart is the DEVIL !

OK - this guy doesn't want advice on what a dipshit we think he is for buying a built PC. He wants help getting a decent deal on a retail PC...

To that end - my advice is go with dell. They seem to have the best deals and the best customer service.

Depending on what you want out of your new PC you could get one for as cheap as like 450 bucks. If you have a set amount to spend that is more towards what they wanted for that wally-world PC you could probably outfit a pretty nice Dell.

No matter where you get a retail PC you aren't going to get one as trim and customized as one you build yourself. However if you do your homework - and ask lots of questions around here you can probably get a pretty decent value and the kind of simplicity and reliability you are looking for.

If you have questions, and the guys around here don't wanna helpout - then you can feel free to PM me...

my gf bought a dell and she was paying 28% interest on it before she noticed the fine print... about a year later. I'd say pay it off in one chunk if you want a computer.

Dude, avoid retail and make your own restore CD! Its dirt easy using something like Norton Ghost now days. Plus you can customize it with whatever OS and apps you'd like.

dewhite: friends don't let friends buy retail (I let my buddy get a Dell and he's still mad at me becuase I was too lazy to build him a decent rig lol).

Whatever - some people are just more happy dealing with a company they know. You can't make everyone see the light. Trust me - I have build somewhere around 20 PC's for people I consider friends, and my family. But for some people, they just aren't looking for the same things in a computer that we are. My mom for instance buys only Macs - and actually I quite prefer it that way -- She can't break it, and I can solve any problem she has over the phone.

I myself would not recommend going to a general needs store for a computer.

Actually, come to think of it, if I *had* to purchase anything computer related, I wouldn't do it at any place that does not have a technician on staff to consult about products or issues. if it was online, I wouldn't purchase it from a place who states "all sales are final"
