Waiting on drives, ghost temp drive?

I Am waiting on hitachi deskstar 1000.d drives. Just looking at getting a temp drive for now and when they come back in stock I get them at 70 each shipping in, instead of trying to re-order now and paying 150 + ship from other retailers. Just curious how to ghost a temp drive onto the new drive when it comes and not lose drive lettering? I'd want the drive to be drive f: for the temp, then when I swap it out I'd like the new drive to be f: aswell and remove temp drive or format it a different letter. Also does the drive type/size matter? The hitachi are 1tb platters so if I got a cheap multi platter drive would that matter?

Or can I buy a laptop to sata converter to use dead laptops drive?
