Waiting for Extreme Video

I decided to upgrade my 3 year old system and it's almost complete. But I'm at a video standstill. The only thing retained from my old system is two EVGA 8800 GTX SLI cards. I'm not a fanboy of either ATi or Nv, I just want the best experience I can buy and this time around, I'm not holdding back. Yeah, I've been a Nv loyalist having purchased six 8800 cards for myself the wife and kids, but I'm ready to purchase now. The Xmas season will soon be upon us it will be hard not to finish off my system with ATI's 5870X2 or whatever they decide to call it. Whatever it's called I'm going quad.

My question is this: Will ATI's 5870x2 be available by Xmas? If it's not, should I then wait for Nv's GT300? Here's my system:

Intel Core I7-975 Extreme 3_33 GHz Processor L3 cache - 8 MB
Cooler Master V10 CPU Cooler for Intel
MSI Eclipse Plus Intel I7 Motherboard X58 1366
Dell Monitor 30" Monitor 3007WFP
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX (2X SLI)
WD VelociRaptor 300 GB (X2 Raid 0)
Corsair Dominator 6GB (3X 2GB) - TR3X6G1866C9DF
Antec Computer Case PC Tower P193 ( w/8 Case Fans)
Thermaltake Tough Power 1200W power supply (W0133RU)
NZXT Sentry LX Fan Control - Dual Bay
NZXT Sentry 2 Fan Control - Touch Screen
Creative Labs X-Fi Elite Pro
Klipsch Pro Media 5.1 Speaker System
Medusa Station 5.1 Gaming Headset
Logitech G19 Gaming Keyboard Color LCD
Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard LCD
Logitech G9x Laser Mouse - 910-001152
Sony Optiarc AD-7220S DVD Burner 22x SATA Internal

I've been away from gaming for almost two years. Much has changed and I'm still getting up to speed;experimenting with O'C this system. I consider myself a newbie so don't laugh too hard at this question. What top speed should I expect to reach from this air cooled system?

It would appear that you want to buy the best out when you are ready to purchase and i applaud you for that, not many people can do that financially. I personally would not wait till x-mas time to even consider the purchase of the X-2 i would if money would allow getting the high 5 series x 2 now if you can support x-fire, however if you cant do the xfire then i would wait for the 300 series imo

edit, saw what board you were using, Get the 5870 x ( 2 )

For such a high end configuration, drop the velociraptors, pick 2x 64 or 128gb SSD's and raid them, and have 2 x 1 or 2TB HD's for data
