Would I see a significant performance increase by doing this upgrade? If so, how much?

Athlon XP 3200
e-VGA GeForce 6800GT AGP (420/1140)
Epox Socket A and AGP motherboard

to

Athlon X2 3800 (i would overclock it)
eVGA GeForce 7800GTX PCIe (i would overclock this too)
Some PCIe/939 board

It would be a pretty good improvenment, but the real question is do you need to upgrade?

And how much is hard to guage, depending on your usual settings, resolution etc

I am with the previous poster, do you need to upgrade? My current rig is slower than your setup, I am running XP 2600+ and GF5900XT. I recently bought a couple 1.6 Xeon's as I was hoping to build an awesome overclocked dually rig, but a friend of mine talked me out of it, bought my chips and is now running them overclocked as a BF2 server for a LAN gaming club in town.

I at that time realized that upgrading is a bit of an "all or nothing" kind of thing. You can spend sick amounts of money to stay on top on the hardware for a few weeks, or you can take a deep breath, lean back, relax, and ask youself: Do I really need it?

I am currently playing Dungeon Siege 2 and Heroes of the Pacific, perhaps 4-6 hours a week total. Other than that I use my machine for web surfing, MS Office, Visual Studio Net, and some Photoshop. Do I *need* a new machine? No, I don't. The games play fine, the apps work fine.

Will that stop me from buying an Opteron 144 S939 when they become available? Probably not. Though I am not sure, I may just hang in there and wait for AMDs M2 or Intels next gen chips that will come out next year. If I were to do that I could save myself a bunch of cash now for which I certainly have better uses than to blow it on hardware.

So in closing, if you can easily afford it, and you will enjoy the upgrade, then do it (though you may want to consider an opteron as well). If you are somewhat tight on cash, I would suggest to wait.

You would see a huge performance increase, but your current system would last you a while anyway. You should try to unlock your GT to an Ultra.

Technically I can afford to upgrade, but to awnser your question, no I don't need to really upgrade. Call of Duty 2 and FEAR run great and I'm assuming Q4 will as well. I just made this thread because I was curious. Thanks for the input guys. :D

Do not upgrade, wait until Vista comes out (and along with it G80 and R600) in Q3 or Q4 of next year. Your current rig is plenty to last you until then.
