Should I wait for the southern island line or should I jump ship and buy a 6970/6950? I currently am sporting a stylish 4870.
 
Are you happy with the performance you're getting right now in the games you want to play? If so, I would probably wait.
 
Something new is always coming out just around the corner so if your not happy with your GPU then get a new one.
 
We need some more information...What are your system specs? What res and games do play? How many PCI-e slots do you have?
That being said, you could take a page out of my book and do what I did..I have a very heavily overclocked 32nm i7 Xeon in an Asus Rampage II EXtreme..My MB has 3 full PCI-e 16X slots, so I am running 2 heavily o/c'd 4850s in xfire...for 1080P, I get the performance of a 6850 for under $100..I can play any game out there with all options...

I would grab another 4870 if you have a 2nd PCI-e slot and X-fire them. I see 4870s for under $90 all the time, and most of the time you can offer the seller $70-80 shipped...

I picked up my 4850s with aftermarket HSF for $45 shipped each;)

i875k
lga1556 (gigabyte udr3 or something)
4gb ram
750w silverstone psu
my monitor's res = 1920x1200

i do have two pci x16 slots but I do believe if I do go xfire or sli the slots operate at x8 each instead of x16 each. at that point there would be no benefit

I am looking to upgrade in order to play games like battlefield..

at the moment I do not play games that intensive where i can see slowdowns except for bad company 2

my initial idea is to purchase one 6970 and later create a new build with x58 mobo and purchase another 6970 for xfire....
 
i am waiting for the fall releases myself. i have a 275gtx which plays okay for whats out there now. hopefully there will be some hint of the new cards by the time the big blockbuster games start showing up.

Wrong. x8 vs x16 has virtually no difference in performance.

You won't notice any difference getting a X58 line mobo and CPU compared to what you have now. Wait for Sandy Bridge-E at least.

Considering you will almost double your performance for around $70 you cannot go wrong! :D
