well ive been looking around at the x800pro's and xt's, and i was wondering what you guys thought. Do you guys think i should buy an x800pro right now and hope to get a one that can be moded to give me 16 pipes? or should i wait for the x800xt's to get into stock and buy one of those?

Truthfully as of late there is really no point to buy a Radeon x800 Pro besides the fact that you can get one in your hands now.

As most people are reporting pre-orders of x800 XT PEs for only around 440 which is what you are going to have to pay to recieve a x800 Pro now.

Gateway and CDW

Finding the version you can mod is very iffy! I would wait to see what the "partners" come up with before jumping into anything!

Is that for this rig? Considered swapping proc/ram/mobo?
Personally I'd wait, pile up some cash, and when pci-express comes out do a proc/ram/mobo/ vid card upgrade.

edit: Oh, and a PSU & probably case (unless you like pain)

The video card you have now is more then fast enough. You need to be worrying about the rest of your system because its whats holding your performance back. Not that overclocked 9800 pro your using.

You need a new proc/mobo/RAM/PSU and probably a new case if you've got a dell.

haha thanks for the replys guys, and now that i think about it, you guys are probally right in the fact that i should upgrade the rest of my rig instead of my vid card :p so ill look into that instead of the vid card. Thanks again for the replys

Alright, after reading this thread, I have a similar question. I have a P4 2.26, with a GeForce4 Ti 4200. I was planning on getting a X800, but apparently that's too powerful for my proc. What would you guys suggest then?

And also, are you guys saying there would be no advantages to this person upgrading from a 9800 to a X800 because of his processor? I find that hard to believe, but, this is my first post for a reaon :p

No thats no what i'm saying. What i'm saying is why do people spend four or five hundred dollars on a video card when they could get one thats plenty fast at half the price and then upgrade their CPU or RAM or something else. I've seen people with like a 9800 pro on a cheap celeron processor and like 256MB of RAM. I just dont see the point.

Personally i would wait a few months if your going to buy a X800Pro or 6800 GT. Ither that or i would get a nVidia 5950 or 9800XT when they get cheaper after the new lineup hits in full force. A 5950 or 9800XT will still be more then fast enough for months to come.

Upgradeing from a 9800 pro to a X800 pro when there are other components that need upgradeing more is just sort of silly IMO.
