So im pretty close to buying my new system, but intels new 45 nm chips i "think" are suppose to be out in the summer? Any one know about that? I just dont want to end up buying something with jacked up prices that only in 3 months will be gone due to a new product.
 
you can always wait for something better in a pc build, just depends on what you want now. 45 nm would probably be a sweet upgrade, but nobody's quite sure when we'll see releases, other than vague quarterly guesses.
 
If you are in no hurry... wait. there was just a price drop for the current stuff.
 
Why always the question of waiting? In the words of NIKE-JUST DO IT! It always changes, deal with it.
 
Well i would just do it, But if waiting a a few months gets me a next gen upgrade....ill take it
 
its just a risk you got to take i guess... it could be 6 months till the new chips come out. maybe 2... who knows...

another scenario of this would be uhh... vista...crysis... anything microsoft... crysis... lol

I agree as money is alwyas an issue. However, waiting does not solve the problem. There is always something better on the horizon. The most you can hope for is two years at best and that may be a stretch. The best bet is to buy the most you can afford in the core components, including the PSU. I say that because the PSU is critical to your system and it is one component that you can possibly keep for more than 3-4 years. I could go on but I refrain.
 
yeah playing the waiting game is gay + it will drive you nuts, seriously. Thats why Im buying the 2900 XT as soon as its out. I used to buy stuff at launch but then I got cheap and played the waiting game, the MUST get best price so Ill wait a bit game...the headache and frustration I realize is NOT worth the money saved. Plus it feels great having the latest toys. :D

You should wait a few months, but then when the next-gen comes out, the next-NEXT-gen will be announced and will be out a few months after that, so you should wait for that. But then when the next-next-gen comes out the next-next-next-gen will be announced and will be out a few months later so you should just wait for the next-next-next-gen! But then...

Yes, I am in the same boat waiting for the 45nm chip and the new bearlake motherboards
to come out?

I certainly do. Unfortunately, I jumped for a opty 170 system with the conroes only 2 to 3 months away.

Yeah if you only buy AMD LOL! Intel will ship 45nm in four to Six months. I'd wait for it and the New Motherboards.
 
The problem is that if you wait to buy the last-gen kit so it's cheap there's a point where it actually is more expensive than the newest stuff anyway, ala DDR1 vs. DDR2. If you want to save some $ you shouldn't buy completely new, but you should wait too long either or availability becomes an issue. I'd own a S939 right now if the hadn't gone & snuck in AM2 on me, which drove up the price and lowered the availability of S939 to insane levels...

I thought I knew but a VAR told me otherwise. So now all I can say is I don't know even enough to seculate anyomre. Even Intel's first boards that were meant for DDR3 will now ship with the ability to run either DDR2 or DDR3. That's not a good sign for DDR3 shipping anytime soon.
 
45nm will not be shipped in volumes till 1Q of 2008. Get a 6600 or 6420 and hold out till cheap Quads or 45nm ships next year.
 
What I would do in your case is, buy it now. Buy something now, and then upgrade in a year. You know, you can always sell it to somebody that always stays in the ICE AGE as far as technology.
That's what I'm going to do, buy a e6600 now, and just wait for then new stuff to come out and upgrade then. I could probably put the e6600 on my old machine by then.

So yeah men, is that extra performance worth a year of waiting? Think about it. How much are you willing to do for that extra performance.
Is not about how fast it is, but about how much fun you have with it.
