wait for ivy or get sandy

What do you have now?

What will you be doing with the new SB/IB system?

I mean, with only a 20% increase in performance I'd say don't bother waiting because the price is right for 2500K right now.

$150-$200 Z68 Gen3 board + 2500K = happy

If you are uber [H] you'll get SB-E but Ivy isn't anything special, imo.

I'm waiting for Ivy just because I can. My dual xeon rig still handles ok for now.

I've been debating this issue myself. I have access to the Winter Intel deal which will most likely be a 2600k, or if we are really lucky, a 2700k. I'm using a i7 920 OC'd to 3.8 ghz. How much extra FPS would I actually get upgrading to lets say a OC'd 2700k?

awwww man after reading these posts I feel like we are really spoiled now. anyway from my personal experience, i jumped from a single core opteron to q9400 and now to sandy bridge 2500k, but sold it and decided to wait for ivy bridge or maybe just get a 2600k

If i'm you I would just buy one now and upgrade later

So I will Be doing a whole new build from ground up.

Even there, it need not be a ground-up/replace everything - I'm doing a three-part upgrade to SB (motherboard/CPU/RAM - grabbed the RAM today) and re-using everything else from drives to case - I'm even keeping (for now) the AMD HD5450. However, thanks to MIcroCenter's "Vitamins K+Z" event, I'm able to actually move from i3 to i5-K for practically the same money (and that's even with a slight upgrade in motherboard choice - from Biostar TZ68A+RCH to ASUS P8Z68-V LX).

The gist of "Vitamins K+Z" - $40 instant bundle savings on i5-2500K + any Z68 motherboard OR $80 instant bundle savings on i7-2600K + any Z68 motherboard (note that the non-K SB CPUs and non-Z68 LGA1555 motherboards are left out).

The reason for the mobo change - readiness for IB (as opposed to the TZ68A+RCH, all the P8Z68-V LX needs is a BIOS upgrade, which I've already downloaded).

i just went sb from i5-760 quad and love it even though i didnt get one of the magical low voltage 5ghz runningi chips its still decent my i5 clocked in at 4ghz and im at 4.7ish on the 2600k but the main reason i upgraded was because ivy bridge cpu is alrelady compatable with my motherboard so i can sell my current sb chip and plug and play!

I honestly don't see why you wouldn't get SB. No one whose gotten one has complained about it.

Like other members have stated...
- IB is months away.
- i5 2500K is on sale now for a pretty good price

I'd just get a used 2600K with board like Im about to post for sale because im getting a Sandy Bridge E K series 6 core. It might be the best bet for you.
