Okay guys, here's the dealeo. Currently in school, majoring in IT. I wanna learn Linux and have decided, if I can find the money, to build a stripped down, budget box. No frills. No bells or whistles. It just runs. I don't want to dual boot simply because I want to be able to access my Windows box to look online for help when needed. Also, I want to keep it separate because I want to be able to fuck around all I want and not need to worry about anything else.

Anywhoo, I've browsed newegg for a bit and this is what I've found...
ASUS A7V8X-X . . . $49
AMD Duron 1.6GHz . . . $47
256MB Kingston ValueRAM . . . $45
Plextor 52X24X52 CD-RW Drive . . . $46
TOTAL = $187

I have an old Gainward GeForce 3 at home that I can use. For the HDD, I'm going to upgrade the HDD in my Windows box and give the 40GB drive I have now to the Linux box. I'll do some more browsing and find a cheap but effective HSF for the proc later.

Things I need/questions I have.
-- I need a relatively cheap but reliable case. Looking for something plain, boring with a decent, reliable PSU.
-- What are some other sites you guys use besides newegg? I've heard zipzoomfly mentioned around here a couple of times.
-- Anyone have any recommendtaions as to other budget parts I could use instead of the above listed? I'm looking for cheap, reliable parts. Price is the number 1 concern, however I don't want to sacrifice quality in exchange. This box has to last me for at least 3 more years.

If you would, give your input. I'd appreciate it. :D

Antec SLK1600 is my fav for budget builds. The newer SLK1650, though, looks real nice—350W PSU rather than 300W, and 120mm fans.

Also, consider a board with integrated graphics; the nForce2 boards are a PITA to get fully operational in Linux, but it CAN be done. I have friends who've done it, and with Slackware, no less. I've used a couple of Biostar M7NCG 400s, they're pretty nice.

CPU, you may as well just get an Athlon. And here's a nice cheap HSF.

Don't ask me, though; I'm still a Windows luser.
