W98se Major Lockups

Last night I downloaded a 4 MB Intel Internet Accelerator
file for W98se and upon reboot the system "locked up". I
was able to reboot in safe mode and ran scan disk and from
the Control Panel/Remove Programs I proceeded to remove
the Intel Internet Accelerator Program. I then used Find
to locate a couple more remnants of Intel Accelerator and
deleted them. I rebooted but could only do so in "safe
mode". I ran scan disk and then System File Checker.
System file checker identified 3 corrupt files: 1.
user.exe; 2. FilesOp.exe and 3. setupx.dll. I elected
to "restore" #1 and #3 from C:\Windows\options\cabs and
save the two old files in c:\windows\system. I could not
find a restore file for FilesOp.exe so chose to skip it.
Rebooted and now got the error message "Mprexe" program
performed an illegal operation and I could no longer
reboot in safe mode but could get to the DOS prompt. From
the prompt I ran "scanreg/restore" and restored to an
older registry. This got me a little further with the
bootup tries by still ended up with the error message
about "Mprexe" performing illegal operation. I then
switched the jumpers on my two hard drives and switched
my "C" drive to Slave and my "D" drive to Master. For the
moment my computer now boots but will not load Norton Anti
Virus and Windows Registry Chercker puts another error box
in the middle of the page saying that "Windows encountered
an error accessing the system registry". (it sits on my
screen as I type as a previous restart did not repair the
registry). How do I get my original "C" drive back to
normal so I can use it as the Master. With more than 20 GB
of programs and data, the last thing I want to do is take
everything off my drive, re-install W.98 and everything
else as it would take me weeks (if ever) to get everything
running together again without conflicts etc.

Have you tried the repair from the Windows 98 CD? I haven't used Windows 98 for a long time but I believe you can boot from the CD and choose to do a repair. It may work.
