So I spent 3 weeks troubleshooting my new comp 'cause it was rebooting by itself over and over again without reason or error dump (XP BSOD dumps memory and automatically reboots), turns out I didn't clear the CMOS when I reflashed to 1.7 BIOS

edit: no that wasn't the problem either *sigh*

Things i've changed out so far:
- Power supply
- Video Card
- Sound card
- Memory

Things to try and swap out:
- Motherboard
- CPU
 
Everyone has idiot moments like that. I spent an hour bitching at my computer once because windows installation would not recognize my hard drive. After the hour, I realized that I was completely retarded and loaded my SATA drivers.

I have this older Asus CUBX P3 motherboard that don't have a CMOS jumper and the battery was convently located under my video card in the APG slot. I reflashed the BIOS and thought I was clearing the CMOS with the only jumper on the entire board. Pulling my hair out with crashes I open my old manuel and find out that solo jumper is for, get this, to enable jumper free operation. GRRRRRR! Who don't put a CMOS jumper on a board??! So I had to pull the video card and remove the battery and now it works like a champ.

....I still remember opening one of the very first P4 "clamshell" packages. Pulling, pulling, pulling, then ZING that sucker popped open and the poor P4 did the projectile motion thing across my garage and whacked hard into the opposing wall. Shit.....

Only bent about half the pins on the thing......:rolleyes: An hour with a 0.5mm mechanical pencil and I got it in the socket. A heavy sigh of relief as the thing booted up.....

Lol bbs.

I spent a day trying to fix a machine that had a flaky power button. Random restarts, shutdowns. Sometimes it wouldn't post. When we took it off the UPC, it worked. Put it back, no go. Smacked it a couple of times, and it finally figured it out :p
 
Bah, I've once tried everything I could do about my computer not booting, and I felt like I was going to cry...

So I decided to Remove the Mobo and try it without the case... Went to unplug the power connector on the Mobo... Yeah. It was already unplugged for me :rolleyes: :p

Plugged it Back In, everything works fine... :)
 
can you break a p4 by dropping it? i was walking up the stairs (dark), attempted to turn on the light, lock the door, while carrying a p4 1.7 celly and its craptacular heatsink. it fell from my hand to the ground, and i think it landed on the heatspreader. heh, im a moron.
 
I remember one of the stupidest things I did was forget to put the processor in the socket but manage to put the hs/f on it :rolleyes:
I spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong with the pos and noticed that the heatsink was loose with nothing under it :)

btw this was 4 in the morning after I had been up for 48 hours
 
'fraid my best ones ain't that great...

(1) put a 2nd hdd in a system from a comp. comp wouldn't boot. hdd was old, i gave up. it hit me 45min later: never switched the jumper from M to S. hdd's still in there, just not hooked up.

(2) put a floppy data cable in backwards once... took me an hour to get the d*** thing hooked up right.

(3) got a comp that kept insisting its keyboard was locked... when the board wasn't. when i realized that my usual method of fixing things (percussive maintenance i.e. a swift kick in the case) was working about half the time, i went straight for the toolbox.
cut the wires on the thing and now it works fine. can't lock the keyboard, but i'm so not worried.

Not much I can say, just that it will radomley reboot. it will do that at any stage, and after its been up for any amount of time.
