I woke up today, jumped on world of warcraft and was running around Ironforge with my computer slideshowing the whole way. Then I hear the door bell bright and early, low and behold its the fedex guy dropping off my new computer parts. wowow, i told my UBRS (at 10am?!?!) that i had to leave and build my new computer.

Packing list seemed to be in order.
MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI mobo
Athlon 64 939 3500+
eVGA Geforce 6800 GT vid card
Antec p160 case
xp-120 HSF/ w/panaflo 120mm

I quickly logged out, unplugged my current computer, and quickly tore open the boxes I had received.

Quickly attathced the mobo to the mobo tray of the case and started throwing it all together. I took a break in the middle to watch pulp fiction because my body hurt from all the weird positions i was getting into on the floor.

Once it was all together the day of reckoning was upon me. I plugged in my mouse/kb etc. Turned it on....

This really neat "Platinum" boot screen comes up and i'm ready to go. Throw in my windows xp cd and hit del to go to bios.

nothing happens.....i hit delete again.......again......nada. I'm forced to stare at this, increasingly annoying, platinum logo. I can't figure out what's going.

I try taking out my ram and trying a new stick. Same deal. I try unplugging my slave HD. Same deal . I unplugg my cd-roms. Still stuck at the post screen.

Does anyone know what could be the problem here? its now 2am and i started this project at like 10:30am early this morning. I've exhausted my knowledge and hope someone could give me some ideas as to what is wrong.

When i boot up i can quickly hit tab (to view the post screen) and i see that it locks at Memory: 1024k ok.

This says it no matter how much RAM i have in there. 1 stick, 2 sticks, and different kinds. I just had this ram in my old computer so i don't think it is bad ram. especially since i've tried 3 different sticks of ram.

Reset your CMOS yet?

Also, unplug all drives.

Run it with just CPU, Motherboard, RAM, and video card.
 
i have not reset the CMOS but its a brand new mobo, do i need to do this? it should be default already. I will try it though. I'll try w/ no drives as well.
 
I recommend doing it, as it has been a probelm before, though it's rare.
 
Incorrectly installed HSF I bet. From what I understand the XP 120 was supposed to be incompatible with the Neo mainboards because of the proximity of the caps.

The last time I got that hasty on a build, I actually left the clear orange tape on the bottom of the heatsink when I installed it... then I was trying every thing under the sun to figure out why my machine wouldn't POST, until eventually I disassembled the entire thing and found the culprit when I liad the heatsink upside down on the table.

Problems with new builds almost always seem to arise from stupid, hasty mistakes like this. That is why I have learned to take my time and assemble the motherboard, proc, RAM, and video card outside of the case on top of the motherboard box and power on the system before I close everything up... just to make sure I get everything right.

Good call, thermal throttling could definately be it.
 
Happened to my First LGA775 rig, i didnt install the HSF right and the CPU shot to 80C 5 seconds after bootup and shut itself off until i reseated it.
 
I wouldn't think it was his HSF, because like you said, it should have shut itself off. I would think that its probably the Master HDD. Unplug everything cept the video card and memory, as thats all you need to access the bios anyway. Try that.
 
Did you get a new psu/ 24 pin adapter aswell? (The Neo4 uses a 24 pin connector IIRC)
 
Yea i've learned my lesson as well.
The first time when i rushed things building my com.
I am not sure if this is going to help you , but the problem i had was i had the incorrect type of screws on my motherboard. Thus it wasn't grounded and it got stuck at the boot screen and just hanged. Then after i realized my stupid mistake it was all good =).
Though i was lucky cuz motherboard not grounded could fuk it up bad.
 
been there done that burned the shirt.... I did a build darn thing wouldnt come up, I freaked started checking every thing couldnt find the problem then It came to me... it wasnt plugged in .... man I felt like such a idiot...
