Last week I started getting this error on my 580i:

"Insert Smartchip"

the only thing I have been able to do to get it back running is to shut down, pull battery, pull SIM, and reinsert everything.........just a nusaince want to know what could cause it, doensnt really matter as I just picked up a friends old iPhone for $30, and am passing this 580i off to my mom temp.

I've had my 580i for almost 2 years now - actually it's my third one. They seems to be plagued with all kinds of problems. I don't have this problem specifically but I have plenty of others ( random shut downs, unresponsive keys, broken keys, etc).
Though I did want to say that when it shuts down (whether by my choice or it's own) I have to remove the battery to get it to power on again. No idea what the problem is there but you're not alone.

I have a older 810i and have had some issues with the sim and battery contacts. I think I've only had to take the sim and batt out once or twice in the three years I've owned the phone.
with that said I'd suggest taking the batt & sim out and cleaning all contact points inside the phone and on the sim & batt as well.
