i just got an acer 17" 12ms LCD monitor, and i have a question about refresh rate and vsync. from what i understand, 12ms equals a refresh rate of 83.3hz. however, in my display properties, the refresh rate is set to 75.
i used to play counter-strike on my old 17" CRT at 1024x768 with refresh rate of 85 and vsync on. everything ran super smooth. should i also turn vsync on with my new LCD, and is it ok for the refresh rate to be 75 on a 12ms monitor?

The Herz measure is actually unrelated to the delay of the panel; 75 is fine. I can't recall what vsync does.

This is correct. VSync, I believe, forces the hardware to wait to send the image to the screen until the whole image is drawn. Without this you can see "tearing" in games where, for example, the corner of a building would appear to be split in half horizontally as you are panning your viewpoint from side to side. VSync is delt with by your video card and thus has no bearing on what type of monitor you have.

I never run anything without vsync on. Looks liks crap without it.

Same reason I don't run anything with it on. If you've got a 60hz refresh rate and at any time your fps goes below 60 it will immediatly drop to 30fps. In FPS, or any game for that matter I can live with some tearing in close quarters situations for the sake of having good IQ and fps that can vary between 60-45 without immediatly dropping to 30 fps.

Can someone please explain why VSync makes the framerate drop to 30FPS as soon as the framerate drops below 60?!?!

I'd love to use VSync if it didn't mean cutting my frame rates in half :(

The ratio between rendered frames and displayed frames has to be even in order for vsync to work.

Wow, not to call you a liar, but that has never happend to me before. Perhaps I have never dipped below 60 so I've never seen that problem. Do you have a link or anything where I can read about this? It sounds quite curious.
