Hi all. So I'm trying to figure out how to get the best performance / visual quality from my monitor, a Phillips 144hz panel. While 144hz is great for the desktop, I obviously can not sustain anywhere near 144 fps in most 3D heavy games. However, in some I can hold a steady 60+ but annoyingly, the monitor jumps from 60hz to 100/110/120/144 hz -- nothing in between. The closest I can kind of get is 72 - if I use 144hz and then Adaptive/Half-rate, which from some quick testing presented some annoying quirks of its own.
What I am trying to understand is what the GPU does when vsync is turned on, but the fps dips below the refresh rate? I think it just displays double frames? and so triple buffering if enabled displays 3 identical frames instead of 2? I experiemented with triple buffering but the 'feel' of it drove me nuts.
