So i just got my 7800, lovin it. Had a lot of friends come over and check it out. They all called me retarted for runnin vsync always on because it caps my refresh rate at 60fps (lcd). I dono but i just cant STAND any screen tearing. It wasnt to bad with my 800xl in most games, but it seems twice as bad with this 7800 gtx. No big deal tho cus i run vsync on anyway...

hrm.. anyone else get annoyied with screen tearing?

Me, I can't stand it at all. The way I set my games, I never hit my refresh of 75 anyhow, though, so V-sync is off.

I am with you. with my SLi setup screen tearing is a HUGE problem. I have even thought about going back to a CRT because of it. I simply can't stand it.

I try to do anything I can to stop it. I run V-Sync whenever possible. Usually for most games I get excellent results and the tearing is minimized for the most part. Except for HL2 which always runs at really high FPS no matter what I do.

You can tell your genius friends that they wouldn't be able to see more than what your monitor is capable of at that resolution anyways(most likely 75) or if you don't have a refresh fix for windows 60 fps cap. The benefit of leaving vsync on greatly outweighs the tiny fps hit.

good deal, just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing out on something by only gettin 60fps...

well i can tell a big difference between 60fps and 85fps, so if I were in your shoes I'd be missing out by having vsync on. but if you are content, then so be it.

I've had bad experiences with Vsync in different games. different games would give me different performance hits. some games gave an enormous hit to FPS that i could notice while vsync was on. some people think its a cut and dry option, but its really not.

Get ReForce, set your refresh rate to whatever you want (within your monitor's ability) at what resolution you use, turn Vsync on, and enjoy.

you wont be able to see anything beyond the refresh rate like people have said.

I refuse to play without VSync. Even better if I can triple buffer. There is nothing more annoying than torn frames. YUCK!

Also, as the name implies you are syncing to your vertical refresh, not 60fps. (Unless your refresh is set to 60)

Awesome program. Get it!!!!

Well obviously...

But what he is getting at is that he might see huge frame drops. Some games will just cut your frame rate in half if you are running over your refresh. So if your Refresh was 85 and your frame rate was 86 you would get 43fps.

Triple Buffering eliminates that halving, right?

I dunno, I am unfamiliar with triple buffering, but thats a damn good question and hopefuly you are correct.

Hmmmm, I may be wrong but I don’t think Triple Buffering is for that reason.
As I recall triple Buffering creates 3 Buffer areas in the video ram, one for reading, writing, and a storage area.
This allows the card to speed up processing by working on one render while another is being accessed in another buffer.
The third buffer is the temporary storage buffer, so 2 processes can be worked on in parallel while the temp buffer is waiting to be copied into the rendering buffer.

BTW, I run only with Vsynch on all the time.
I can not stand the tearing, it ruins the IQ.
I would rather have lower frames then tearing.

Oh thats interesting, I should try it out now that I have an LCD, with my CRT I hardly even noticed any tearing but moreso with lcd, even though the lcds iq looks better and saves space.

hmm does this works on LCD 2005fpw to be exact? :D

i hate tearing as well so what i do is turn vsync on always and enabled triple buffering. idk if this is true, but these 2 relates each other. i'd like to know what does triple buffering do as well.

I read it somewhere if you want to use triple buffering, you need to turn your vsync. ever since, ive never had tearing issue using these 2 enabled.

yea i only get 60fps because my refresh on the lcd is 60hz. Sometimes ive gotten that half crap, but tripple buffer IS made to fix that. So i run with both those on all the time. Ive always had ati cards and in the last few drivers they have had... grr i cant remeber the name, but basically it did 4xaa at 2x performanc hit, but it forced vsync on. That was a win win situation for me since i have vsync on all the time anyway... anything like that for my 7800?

I'm not using it now, but that's because my x600pro can't consistently pump out 60 fps (DVI LCD connection) with the IQ that I like, but I do get a fair amount of tearing on HL2. I'll definitely be looking into it with my 6800gt when it gets here though, becasue the tearing annoys me quite a bit too, and 60fps is plenty for me.

vSync causes a little bit of reduction in performance. If you aren't getting enough FPS to go over your refresh rate then there isn't any reason to use vSync. If you are consistently over the refresh rate on FPS, then the performance hit from vsync won't really matter anyway, and you can't see any fps over your monitor's refresh rate anyway.

Cant stand vsync personally. I'm in the crowd of "sure I cant see the FPS, but I sure as hell can feel them". So yeah, at 60FPS (LCD) in any game it feels sluggish.

Yes, exactly....

I can get 200fps in Quake 3 sure.. but VSync makes it laggy and I can't hit anything...

I dunno I can't really feel frames per sec, but I'm going to try out vsync and see if it makes it feel slugish, if so I'll turn it back off.

I use Vsync with refresh force and triple buffering. With the graphics settings I use I average 60-85 fps anyways. So Vysnc is a no-brainer.

For me it seems hard to believe someone can't be satisfied with 60FPS... I'm happy with 30 usually.

I hate the tearing with VSYNC off, BUT, I hate poor and varying performance worse :(

So I always keep VSYNC off when playing games, I just can't stand the change in FPS going from 60FPs to 30FPs in multiples instantly. I want 60+ FPS at all times, heh.

But the tearing can be bothersome at times, I've learned to live with it.

Just the nature of how things work right now.

Maybe things will change one day.

Things have, trilinnear filtering, almost zero performane hit and fixes this half fps problem. i cant find it with nvidia, but all dx9 ati cards have it.

To me, nothing beats the cinamatic feel of a solid 60fps with no jaggies and no screen tearing.

You mean Triple Buffering, and not all games have the option, and not all video cards allow you to force it in D3D or OpenGL.

Triple Buffering increases the memory storage size needed. So in some situations it may be texturing out more to system RAM from local memory if the space of the local memory is exceeded.

I agree that the optimal solution is VSYNC on with Tripple Buffering forced. It should perform well with 512MB video cards. But again, it's not always available.

Nothing worse than fragging and then, Oh shit! 30fps lag!

I hate tearing so I always play with VSync and Triple Buffering enabled.

I don't use it. Probably some old predjudice against it from the old days of worrying about a performance hit.
I run most games at 1280x1024 85 refresh rate on an old Dell 19" crt and don't notice tearing.
My eyes must be bad.

Totally agreed.

Anyone who's anyway decent at games will instantly notice the lag introduced by enabling vsync and turn it off straight away.

Plus, it does hurt fps alot more than I think people realise. If the framerate exceeds the refreshrate, you won't get a performance hit, just a performance 'cap'. however, when it starts dropping below (and when you need that extra performance the most) your performance will drop alot as the graphics card has to keep waiting for the next refresh cycle to display the next frame. On a 60hz lcd monitor, this 'window of opportunity' is alot greater than a crt at 85hz.

For some reason in regular cs1.6, when vsync is turned off, i start my own lan game and everything loads fine, but the game seems to be in super fast motion. I can run to the other end of the map in 2 seconds and a full clips empties in a second. But when i turn vsync on its fine. Cant seem to get it working with vsync off.

Having VSync on doesn't necessarily mean you're stuck at 60fps. If you're set to 85Hz, the cap will be 85fps. Who the heck plays at 60hz anyway?
