well, I'm in the market to upgrade some VI3 licenses from standard to enterprise, and buy a few additional enterprise licenses, but now vSphere 4 is here 9almost. Anyone know the upgrade pricing yet? I've got their pricing guide, but it doesn't let me know the VI3 -> vSphere 4 upgrade path pricing. we might even go with some vSphere 4 Advanced licenses, instead of Enterprise, as it looks like a good bundle, has vMotion for less than going enterprise.

I haven't tried it out yet, but, does it look good? bugs? should I bother holding off on VI3 purchases?

No ideas from me, as of yet. I missed the webinar due to my own esx fires, today.

I would imagine pricing will be released this week, probably tomorrow (Apr 23rd).
Lots and lots of new features. I have been holding off to deploy a couple new ESX 3.5 to go right to 4 without having to worry about 3.5->4 upgrade issues.
 
yea, i"m racking my brain trying to figure out what to do. we're going to be buying a few more 8-way SMP boxes (sun x4600's most likely, so 32 cores, 128GB RAM), but I was hoping the Nehalem based 7000 series would be out sooner, so, if we go 8-way, we need to use the 7300's. and then there is the ESX version issue, was all ready to pull the trigger on more VI3 to cover said big iron and upgrade some existing 4-way boxes (dell R900's) but now vSphere is out!
I do sorta wanna just go with vsphere, but the last thing I need is another Vi3 update 3 (every remember not being able to power on, power cycle, or move their VM's after the 60-days? fortunately I hadn't upgraded yet, but bleeding edge scares me :D)
 
I think lopoetve must have been one of those VMware employees goin' nuts in the blue shirts during the announcement yesterday haha.
 
Here's some non-NDA info about the licensing path:

The upgrades from VI3 to VSphere will be additional licenses and not
shown on the VI3 portal, but the new VSphere portal. This is to avoid
any issues with current licensing until you decide to upgrade. Note
that if your SNS is not current you will not be given upgrades to
VSphere and you will have to work with VMware to get the upgrade
licenses issued once you upgrade after the GA (Generally Availability)
release in late May.

• VSphere is now licensed by 1 CPU not 2 like in VI3
• VMware has released an upgrade advisor

• VMware has released a large amount of resources related to
licensing. Lots of new changes that add more value and reduce
complexity.

• If you want to continue buying VI3 you can for another month, but
after that you will have to buy VSphere licenses and downgrade them to
