Hi,

I am obviously very new to this.

On VMware's website I can see the prices per CPU of the different versions of vSphere and the support packages.
I also see some talk of license expiration.
Yet nowhere does it say how long it takes for a license to expire.
Does everyone know that it is for, say, 1 year and nobody cares to mention it.

Could you please give me a quick guide of how VMware's licensing cost is calculated.

1. So when someone says that their license expired and most of the features got locked, do they mean that their support contract ended? If so, does unlocking back the features require that they buy only a new support contract?

2. If the answers to 1. are both Yes and Yes, then is my math correct:
VMware provides "Basic" and "Production" yearly renewed support packages.
The license cost is paid one time, up-front and requires one of the yearly support packages.
For vSphere the "Basic" support costs a little less than 1/4 of the license and the "Porduction" costs exactly 1/4. This is the same as buying a new license (which includes support) every 4.75 years and 4.00 years respectively. For vSphere Standard those numbers are 3.00 years and 3.50 years.
All numbers are rounded up or down for clarity.

3. Does VMware charge for license upgrades from, say, 5.1 to 5.5, or for major upgrades from, say, 5.X to 6.0 when it comes out?

4. When you buy a license for a particular server-processor, are you free to upgrade the processor to one with more cores or even move this license to new server-processor as long as you destroy the previous installation of the license?

5. Is the licensing for the other VMware products (like vCenter Server) basically the same - one time license purchase and then an yearly support payment?

2. no idea, don't let support lapse?
3. 5.x to 5.x+ no charge. 6.0 will be a new buy. We just went from 4 to 5 and it cost good money.
4. Per socket is per socket. You move licenses freely.
