Can anyone provide me the name of a reliable utility that shows the amount of vram used after loading a program?

GPU-z does also, but it doesn't have the on-screen display that Afterburner does.

It does, or did on my GTX 570 SLI. You may need to enable it in the OnScreen Display area of the afterburner settings though. At the bottom right of the main afterburner window click Settings, hit the Monitoring tab at the top, then in the scroll box at the middle find the "Memory usage" option and highlight it (click it). Below, click the checkbox that says "Show in on-screen display" and hit OK.
