Hi, I'm a noob to these forums, and I'm also pretty noob with hardware so I've come looking for advice.

First, specs:
GPU: ATI Radeon x1950 Pro 512MB
PSU: Thermaltake Purepower 500w
MoBo: Asus P5W DH Deluxe
OS: Windows XP SP3
CPU: Intel Core2 6700 @ 2.66GHz

I've had this setup for a while, and it gets the job done. The newest addition would be the PSU, which is about a year old, but nothing else has been changed recently.

My problem is with my GPU. About 5 minutes into a game, the monitor goes black and into standby and the message "VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator or it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands." Sometimes there will be gray vertical bars across the screen before this happens, sometimes the monitor just stays black.

GPU is not overclocked and runs up to 60C, which isn't too bad. I have cleaned out the dust and updated the drivers to no avail. :confused:

Hoping someone here can lend me some advice, thanks in advanced!
 
sounds like its dieing. No warranty left on it I'm sure (but check to be sure). How much of a budget would you put towards a new one?
 
You overclocking at all?

Try enabling ATI overdrive and underclocking both the GPU and GDDR by 50mhz... Your card might not be fully stable at stock.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm not willing to give up or compromise just yet xD

I'm pretty sure I have found the culprit though. I'm using Everest to monitor my temperatures, and realized while my GPU/GPU Ambient stays low, my GPU VRM is heating up over 120C under load, before it crashes.

I gave the card a good clean and removed what little dust there was, but my VRM is still up there. I don't even know were the VRMs are located or how to cool them specifically, does anyone know?
 
they are usually located around the gpu ship, little squares. You can buy heatsinks for them but they wont cool them enough to stay the problem. Its dying, all that will do is buy a little time unfortunately.

VRM heatsinks will drop temps by 5-10 degrees max and 110c is still very hot even for those older ATI cards.

What do you use the machine for?

There are ceramic heat sinks already mounted on the VRMs so it's time to just let this one go!

I've been using it mostly for games such as Fallout, Mass Effect, Portal, etc. I never really aimed for extensive graphics though.

Time to look for a card with similar specs and a decent price, have any suggestions? I'm hoping for under $150, thanks!

Thanks for all the help! I'm just going to get the HIS 5770 since the deal with Dirt 3 is just a killer.
