VPU error...from what?

i was loading up hl2 the other day and my screen went black. it popped back on and said my VPU had recovered from an error. wtf is this? i'm using the same omega 4.7 cats on my 9800pro that i've been using for some time now. i switched over to a new case and mobo, thats all that has changed in my setup. the only thing i can think that would cause this was my card was kinda leaning more to one side than the other my my agp slot. would this cause a vpu error? what does cause vpu errors?
 
VPU errors generally happen when a card gets too hot, or when the power supply is bad.
Perhaps the new case has a dodgy power supply? Or does it not have any good case fans?
Another thing could be that the new motherboard uses a dodgy chipset, so you might have to reduce the AGP speed to 4x, or turn off fastwrites or something (although I'd upgrade the bios, chipset drivers and videocard drivers to the latest first, they may solve the problem without having to settle for less performance).
 
so you think it could be a bad driver install? i installed the latest omegas and didn't like them so i uninstalled them and installed the ones i was using before on my other system. think i may have missed something when i was uninstalling? i used driver cleaner. would this cause something like this to happen?

Well as I say, it could be drivers, but I'd suspect the chipset drivers first (dodgy AGP bus and all)... And it's easier to just upgrade the bios and reinstall all drivers first, than to poke around with bios options for the AGP port, or switching PSUs and all that, so I'd start with the drivers yes.
 
my mobo is on v1.9...thats all that has come out so far. its an AMS ecube - a SFF. the PSU is a 420w that came out of my old system so i know it works great....hmm.....i'm gonna try reinstalling everything and putting the official cats on there and seeing if that helps. might i need to go down on my mobo bios and see if that helps?
 
Well, if you still experience problems after reinstalling the chipset and videocard drivers, I would suggest that you reduce the AGP speed, and perhaps disable fastwrites. Those tend to be the main culprits... Especially AGP8x is quite sensitive. The signaling rate is so high that it's very susceptible to interference. If that is the problem, then lowering to AGP4x should make your system stable (you can set that with the control panel of the ATi drivers, the SMARTGART tab).
If it still doesn't work then, then I don't know... could just be that this motherboard is dodgy... or some parts have gotten damaged.
