Hello all,

I've been told that when I host LAN based games and want have a friend from the outside join, I can via VPN setup. Is this true? and as such, what is needed for this setup? Links to existing articles on this subject are welcome answers too.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

XP Pro has a built-in VPN server. Just do a google search, there are tons of articles giving step by step instructions for enabling it. You may also have to open ports on your router.

Technically, yes, but you're better off just forwarding the ports on your router necessary to "serve" your game. Less overhead..better performance.

I think he's talking in terms of games that allow for either Local LAN play or for internet play through something like Gamespy, but dont offer direct IP-to-IP internet play. Yeah, for something like that you can use a VPN.

not to rain on your parade but the info you have will get your vpn up and going but beyond that its much deeper involved and I myself cant get that awnser through google or what.. Im just gonna buy a book strictly about setting up vpn's and implementing into my network or across the internet... :p

Well, you can easily use Hamachi for your easy-to-setup VPN needs. There is no configuration (if you use the beta ver) so very easy to use.

another vote for hamachi here

i use it, works great, havnt tried gaming over it yet, but why wouldnt it work, its so seamless and easy to install use..

just create a new network, give it a password, both you and your buddy join it, and he can join your game by IP, it should work without issue so the theory goes....

as a matter of fact, youve given me some incentive to actually setup hamachi here at work, and screw with it somewhat....thanks :)
