VPN Problems with LAN

OK, I posted a different thread about my LAN losing its connection after it sees everything only minutes before. I'm gonna ask now if this might be because of my VPN connection.

I have a VPN connection calling my office's server in another city from my work laptop. We use the Checkpoint VPN Secureclient software to authenticate through the firewall (i guess that's what it's for) then use the XP dial-up connection to connect to the VPN server. Before, I would have a problem with the XP connection dropping after having difficulties communicating in about 10 minutes of connection. Now, it seems that the web browser is directing all traffic through the server and it, of course, has problems going through the firewall. My I.T. guy said maybe I should not have the work computer connecting to the LAN and sharing files and printers, that that is probably my problem with the whole thing....dropping after 10mins before and not working at all now.

What are some opinions about this? I have run the network wizard again and the way I am connecting to the internet is listed on the "other" page in the wizard which is this...All computers connect through a 4-port router. I even went in the properties of the connection and un-checked the File and Printer Sharing option and it didn't seem to help. How would I re-set this connection up so that the two computers on my LAN are not talking to each other, should I UNINSTALL the File and Printer Sharing? How would I get the VPN to stop taking all my browsing traffic so that it doesn't interfere?

I hope I get some expert response. I have been having trouble with this for a long time and posted on the Computing.net forums and have gotten no where. I would be happy to answer any questions for clarification as needed.

Thanks.

Most likely you can't stop the VPN client from sending all traffic to the office. I know on our Cisco VPN setup it's up to the admin. I send the client the routing config that I want them to use. I could say "All Traffic" goes through it...but I don't.

I'm not really understanding what you are doing on your routing info you're sending through the client. I have tried numerous times to have my I.T. guy let me know what he did and what he can do to get my connection to work properly. He insists that he didn't do anything on his end to change the way it was working before and that his VPN has no problems hooking up and staying connected for hours. He says that it must be my connection, router, or something. This really sucks cuz the way he has me checking my email is through the Microsoft Web Access Server through the browser. I am used to using the regular Outlook program and it's not fair everyone else but me gets to use their regular Outlook!! Boo Hoo!!

Thanks for the reply, though. I appreciate any responses.

After upgrading the firmware on my linksys I ran into VPN stability issues. Downgrading firmware fixed it right up.

Yeah, I went with a new router, though not a major brand name like Cisco or LinkSys and still the same thing. Has anyone had problems with using a cable connection and doing VPN? Anyone able to help otherwise?

Thanks to all who reply.

Can anyone help with any of this? I suppose this is a bump to gather attention again.

I will be ordering a new router with VPN pass-through to see if that helps. Is US Robotics a good brand for routers? All I know they are good with is modems.

OK, let me ask this then...can anyone direct me to another forum that is best suited to help me with my networking problems? One that maybe deals more totally with networking?

Thanks guys.
