VPN for WRT54GL and Mac

Don't bother as it'll crawl at best...

I am just using it for remote surfing.

I was also thinking about getting a synology and using it to set up VPN but a WRT54 I had lying around seemed like a good idea to try.

To answer your question, probably. I would imagine you running out of memory quickly though on a WRT54GL.

VPN performance on consumer routers is terrible. The Synology (depending on the model) has very good SSL throughput.

I use VPN on my Synology NAS. I get acceptable performance through that. Never really tried stressing it too much though.

If you have any spare hardware or want to invest the money, you could put together a pfSense firewall and replace the WRT54GL router completely. You can configure the WRT54GL as an access point and continue using that for wireless.
