It was sickening watching UT beat CS in GSI's game bracket, because I know there are about 18,000 times as meany people who play CS then UT. I even heard people wrote scripts to vote for UT over and over again (how I'm not sure).

So anyway, vote for CS against Diablo II and Starcraft. Starcraft is a decent game, but CS is alot better. Diablo II makes me want to cry.

Head on over and support CS!

Umm, no...

CS was a great MOD up until about beta 7something. (about the same time I stopped actively playing it competitivley), and shortly after that stopped playing it all together.

CS needs to die, people need to move onto something else.

What I mean by this is that there are many a great game engines out now, and coming out. MOD developers need to start those creative juices flowin'.

I'd have to say the best MOD since CS has been DC for bf1942 (it has the same kind of "magic")

/rant :p

Cheers,

Mr. Pain

-- voted StarCraft because that was the best RTS since Total Annhilation (nothing has come close to those two for me in the RTS genre).

CS is dead
that game is so retarded
lets get hit in the leg by a sniper and DIE....amazing...
people who play CS need to upgrade there 450MHZ machines to play somthing better

funny how a game thats "dead" has more people playing it than any other game

i'll agree, but take in mind Stanley's post. He brings up a very good point.

There are many new and more exciting engine's out there that can be utilized to amazing extents. And yet, people are still hung up on making Half Life mods. Sure it's a great engine, but it's time to move on to bigger and better things.

Now I'm sure there will be a CS2 on the HL2 engine, and i think it's a sad thing that it will happen that way. I also think it's a sad thing that we will probably see all HL1 mod's go the way of the dodo when HL2 comes out. Why? Because they should have a long time ago, they should have been brought over, or down right replaced, by other engines out there. Really.

i play cs casually, i'm not one of those die hard players or anything. i just think its a fun game. i hardly think its dead, nor do i think its out of its league. i agree that there are tons of better engines out, but who cares. if its fun, play it. it fills a needed requirement that a lot of people have, a tactical first person multiplayer shooter. people like new guns and small tactical situations. classic playtime, if i were a special forces guy. cs isn't dead, nor is it retarded. it may just not be your forte. move on. the entire argument is annoying.

That is just a popularity contest.

there is no way super metroid should loose to goldeneye.

cs wont die for a very long time, its the most played game and will be unless something major happens, although i quit when 1.6 came out it was an awesome game while it lasted but i will never be back :/

There's no mistaking that fact that this mod was awesome (I don't think very many people can say that they hated it).

It'll probably be around for quite a while longer because most people playing that game are still stuck on it. Most of them will site "It's the gameplay, nothing else has gameplay like this". But in reality, there ARE games/mods out there that have similar gameplay and then some. I find a lot of CS zealots to be very close minded when it comes to picking up something new.

It's too bad really. They are missing out on some fine MP action from other games (and possibly genres). Ahh well, I still snicker at some of my friends still play CS and/or Firearms. Me, I've moved onto greener pastures.

Cheers,

Mr. Pain

there are TONS of games the have the same gameplay and better graphics than CS. I have no idea why its still so popular.

uhhhhh firstly cs kicks ass, and secondly whats DC mod for bf1942? srry i never even played bf1942.

people that suck at the game are jealous that it's STILL the most popular online game there is.

i hope your joking, if not... well you've just proven Mr. Pain correct. CS Zealots don't even expose themselves to any other game.

Jäger: i suck at virtually every computer / non-computer game i play. Consoles, table top, cards, shit i SUCK at solitaire even. But i'm definitly not jealous that CS get's more play time than any other game out there. I play games to have fun, as do most every person that does play them. I know for sure everyone plays games to have fun MOST of the time. I'll admit sometimes I've sat down and been PISSED cuz I suck, or because I died, and so on and so forth.

But still, us that are talking "bad" about CS are doing so not because of jealousy because we suck at it, or that we actually CARE what the number 1 rated online game is. We talk "bad" about it because we know theres so much more better out there. As peepeeface has shown us, many CS player's no nothing else, but CS. which is a shame.

damn, i'm rambling and ranting. / shuts up /

I think it is still around because it is really a simple game. I think people are lazy and don't want to learn new and more complex games. I mean here is CS in a nutshell...

1) Buy Crap: This has become just memorization, b,3,1 b,1,3 b,6 b,7....

2) Two choices: A - stay with your team
B - Run off by yourself and take on the world

3) Outcome: A - Get shot and yell "n00bs!!!" + "Wallhack!!!"
B - Survive and yell "n00bs!!!" + "I 0wn JeWz!!!"

Now see how easy that is...

Tons of people play CS because it is easy for any 12 yr. old to just start playing. The problem is that new games that use better engines have awesome gameplay... it is just that no one wants to take the time to learn the game. I know people will argue with me, but I think some newer games take more thinking than CS. So people don't play them

CS is dead.

UT2K4 is the new kid on the block.

HL2 will, most likely get crushed by Doom3.

Goodbye CS.

Well, it looks like CS is getting beaten around like a bastard child in that poll.

I was pleasantly surprised when Civ 3 beat out GTA:VC in its bracket.

For the tournament so far: http://archive.gamespy.com/titlefight/brackets.shtml

I think SC will manage to edge out Half-Life while Doom steamrolls its half for a colossal SC vs Doom final matchup.

BTW, honestly, CS is NOT played as much as you think anymore. In the dorms around here, people have long since shifted over to newer games. If they play CS its mostly because they don't really have any other choice at the moment.

Theres just something about CS that is just fun and I can't seem to pick it out. Once and a while I will get bored of it, but will come back for more. I bougth CoD and played some MP with my friends and it wasn't too bad, but in the end I was back to CS. After that I bought BF1942 and played desert combat for a bit and it was pretty fun. But in the end I came back to CS for some reason, and I can't seem to figure out what it is.

Playing CS competitively in clans and leagues is alot more fun then public play. But if u play some clans in like Cal-O they can be annoying sometimes. Playing in Cal-M+ makes CS really fun.

But thats just me :)

Hmm now that I rechecked the polls, it looks like D2 has closed in by a hundred votes. Could the tide be turning? Interesting stuff.

i played CS for about 3 years and it just got old. Call of duty, DC, halo, there are countless games that are better.

I quit playing after I was kicked from a server. I got 5 headshots with a Deagle and was told by the Admin I had an Aimbot even though I didnt.

that was the first and last time I played it.

cheers to u, u are DA man, u said it all

CS 4 LIFE

ya the ONE thing that makes CS so ADDICTING, is the way that the guns fire, how they feel and how the crosshiars/hitboxes are. Sure people get annoyed by it but its also what keeps people hooked. CZ will fail because they changed the firing system on the guns. Change in that regard is bad... Bad bad llama

While I will concede that 1.6 has all but ruined the game, I would argue that, just as many have stated CS "Zealots" are closed-minded, they themselves are also forming a short-sighted opinion (especially Spinal, whose attempt at distilling the game will make anyone who's ever played it competitively laugh): deriding the game without experiencing it to the fullest. By this I mean, if you have played public CS, Cal-O CS, or even really Cal-IM CS, you haven't truly played CS. At a high level the game becomes an elegant mix of teamwork, strategy and intuition. It's not a Quake III Team Deathmatch game where everyone runs around essentially solo, it's not a Halo CTF game where teams swap suicide runs for the bomb until one leaks through. Don't get me wrong, other games (and I own and play the vast majority of FPS and RTS games) have alluring aspects as well, but the somewhat slower pace of CS can make for some extremely tense moments, such as a 1v1 or 2v1 to decide a match. While I can respect that the game may not be fun to you, I urge you to bite your tongue on these blanket, "CS is old and boring and it blows" comments, because clearly if you decided you hate the game based on experiences with the limitless number of 12 year-olds whining about hacking in pubs, you haven't really played Counter-Strike. Public CS has a particular problem with this because the lack of instant respawns gives newbies plenty of time to talk shit.

Playing pretty much any MP game competitivley, and with a good group of clannies is ALWAYS fullfilling. However, not everyone has time on their hands like that.

I used to play quite competitivley in CS, mostly on private servers. It was quite fun, I do admit. But once I started playing other games, I found that the depth, fun, and overall gameplay of CS started to lack.

To each their own I guess. Some people like the tried tested and true, where as others like to go out and experience new things. CS definatley wins the "familiarity" factor, not to mention a LOT of gamers will compare other FPS in the same genre to it. CS was good for what it brought to the table, but I for one have moved on :)

And I still stand by my statement that a lot of CSers are a bunch of zealots not wanting/caring to experience something else because "OMG TEH CS IS TEH BESTEST AND EVERYTHING ELSE SUX0RZS!#@$@$"

Cheers,

Mr. Pain

-- I lol'd at spinals comment, pub play pretty much boils down to that :p

Exactly, I would much rather play UT then CS. CS just didn't do anything for me. The game was ok, just not amazing. UT2K4 and Far Cry now those are something to brag about.

Games come and go but cs remains a constant. In another year or two you'll be saying utwhat? Farwho? And there will still be 50,000 people playing cs at any given time. I'll be one of them. :)

i love it when people make fun of cs........why? its still a great game. ive been playing it for three years...........i still play other games, but cs is still sweet. and i dont have a 450mhz computer...

The last decent version was 1.0

CS has been destroyed time after time.

I'll stick with RVS thank you :)

As many times as I have heard it declared dead I still see so many people playing it. I buy new games also but something always draws me back to CS. I guess its just the basic format of the game. CoD, U2k4, BF1942/DC, etc. I have bought them all and I just keep going back to CS. I do well in the new games too. I guess its the round structure of CS that I like. I like a break in the action.

I mean, even if you dont like the game, you have to admit, the game doesnt seem to be going away anytime soon.

Those deathmatch servers in CS are fun. You respawn instantly, at a random area and ppl don't talk as much and its constant action. I prefer deathmatch in pubs then the regular format. Its just a server Mod they put on I think, nothing ont he client side. Its pretty fun.

You misunderstood. Of course there is tons of strategy involved in competitive CS. But what percentage of people who play CS play competitively? I was speaking of why it is so popular. It is such because you don't have to use strategy to "enjoy" the game. Of course to be good at it you do... but the majority of players don't.

This is the close-minded attitude of CS players that bugs people. You believe that CS is the only game that invlolves strategy. I will argue that Halo CTF requires just as much stategy as CS, but the MAJORITY of people who play Halo CTF, are like you described.

CS is not the only game that requires thinking...

This is true of any FPS I can think of offhand; you run around shooting people, although I certainly agree that the majority of CS players do not enjoy it at the level at which I personally find it rewarding, and rather at one at which I personally do not.

I do not believe that CS is the only game that requires strategy, however I will argue that the degree of strategy and the importance of timing and single situations throughought the game (1 on 1s, proper nades, etc.) is higher in CS than in many other FPS due to the round-based system (also true for CoD, etc.) which leads to a less dynamic but more exacting game. It boils down to what you prefer; I would argue that the difference between good and great teams in CoD or CS is predominantly in the strategy and teamwork, and in Halo or UT it's more in the individual skill (there's a reason why CS 1v1 sucks), although I agree this does not make the latter unstrategic. The point is made fairly moot I suppose by the fact that FPS games don't really require all that much thinking across the board.

Thats because they can't play anything else. They're using their 400mhz computer on a GeForce2 that tops out on the Half-Life engine. lol... it doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.

I played CS for 4 years, its 'DEAD'. The only people who still play it refuse to learn a new game and/or spend money to upgrade their computer.. I used to be one of those CS players who'd defend it, but the truth is ... maybe only CAL league play on CS is good. ANY PUBLIC SERVER IS CRAP. Everyone here knows that cheating RUINED CS. The netcode is crap.. I get hit in the leg... 'HEADSHOT', lame.

Anyone who's ever 'once' cheated in CS, has contributed to its death, gg.

CS IS DEAD, All the 'real' gamers left it for the scum sucking hackers to play ... Graphics blow, Steam blows, Hackers blow, CS Blows .... end of story. Stop defending it.. its like saying a Pinto is a great sports car because lots of people drive Pintos ... lol.

Well ain't this just peachy:

http://www.forumplanet.com/titlefight/topic.asp?fid=7205&tid=1320878&p=16
Two of the largest Diablo fan sites have linked to this match and there are a lot of fans who have come in to vote. We've tracked that. However, there has been some talk on some of the forums that suggests that someone has programmed a bot to do voting. If we check our logs and find that is the case, the game that has the offender will be disqualified. Case closed. And if that does happen, I'll be happy to post a link to the offender's site and boast so that fans can bitch at them and not us.

This is supposed to be fun, but cheating won't be tolerated. We are looking over the logs closely and will know for sure before the next match takes place involving the winner from this bracket.

Imagine if CS wins this way, 'twould be pretty sad IMO.

I get paid to travel around my province and play Counter-Strike at tournaments. I've made something like 10 grand playing the game in a year, and most of the hardware in my sig came from one tournament.
