Okay, I posted a thread about overclocking a celeron 300a OC to 450, using a TNT card and possibly using two voodoo 2 card in SLI. Well, I got the cable, connected the cards, installed the driver, and ... phffffit. Nothing. Either games reboot the computer totally, or a blank screen. I have used both of these cards before, run fine, both are 12 MB cards that look identical, but one is a Diamond and the other Creative. My questions are these 1) are the TNT card and the voodoo cards drivers conflicting ? 2) is there a special driver for using SLI ? 3) does using two different manufacturers cards cause the issue ?

Windows 98SE, 256 MB, 10 GB, ASUS P2B motherboard, 300w

If anyone here has used SLI before, and can recall any issues and the solution then please share them with me. Thanks in advance.

If your overclocking on such an old rig then your pci bus is runing way out of spec.see if they work at normal clock speed on the celery. The voodoos are more sensitive than the tnt to bus speeds, The tnt can handle up to 75mhz (versus 66 normal) on the agp bus but the the voodo will have trouble in the 40-45 mhz range (versus 33 normal)
 
I see what you are saying but the AGP and PCI buses are still within spec since the celeron is 4.5 x 100. 3x or 4.5 x 100 the buses are the same. But overall the overclock could be an issue. Thanks !

You would have had to change the fsb not the clock on the cpu, its locked. to get 450 you would have to go 3 x 150 fsb and your agp bus woud run at 100mhz and your pci wouldrun 1/3 @ 50mhz.way out of spec unless you can change the ratio on your board
 
I had a 300a doing 450 with sli back in the day. It was nice to be able to have the absolute best 3d video solution, and not have to dish out close to a grand to get it.

I didn't have a tnt thrown in the mix though. Maybe there's something wrong with the voodoo's, or the motherboard? tough to trouble shoot now. I suggest a lengthy google session :D

the celly 300a was a 66fsb, so the multi is 4.5.... 4.5x100=450, so the mobo is running within spec.....

lol yep, doing that as we speak. Found one instance of SLI and a TNT2 running together, so that is encouraging. Looking more like a conflict with voodoo drivers and video bios ID, maybe the manufacturers made it so two different cards couldn't do SLI. Maybe a 3rd party driver ?
So far I have tried three different drivers, one old Diamond, a newer Diamond, and a Creative. Had it as two Diamond cards, then one Diamond and one Creative. Thrid party driver may be the only choice. Dunno :confused:
 
try to find the 3dfx reference drivers, i'm sure they're still around somewhere, or at least run the same driver on both V2s
 
Are you sure you have the external cabling hooked up right? If not, you won't get any 3D display. The dual Voodoo 2 hook up internally with a small cable. Externally the VGA jumper cable goes from your TNT2 to the first Voodoo 2. your monitor plugs into the first Voodoo 2.

I just got my second computer up and running, the main parts are:

WinMe
1.4GHz Tualatin core Celeron
Asus TUSL2
2 Canopus Pure 3D 2's (Voodoo 2's in SLI)
SB Live
3Com ethernet card
Diamond Viper V770 Ultra

I'm using the FastVoodoo2 4.6 drivers from the site above and everything works great. Here's the driver page for 9X/WinMe: http://www.3dfxzone.it/dir/3dfx/voodoo2/win9x.htm

Voodoo 2's were freakin expensive when they came out. My Diamond Monster 3D 2 was $300, and the Canopus ones were around $50 more since they were the only boards that didn't use the reference design (there was also a more expensive one that had a fan). They also have a proprietary internal SLI cable, and external cables. I bought my pair off eBay a few months ago for $20 shipped :)
 
I can remember drooling over the Canopus. :eek: It had TV out also iirc. I was stuck with 3d blaster Voodoo 2's around here....not that they sucked. ;)

hey, thats the exact same link I found, took me a while to find it. Very good site, had just what I needed ! I used the driver for the mismatched cards, had to make sure the old drivers were totally wiped and then it finally came alive ! mwahahahaha, majic ! your machine is much faster than mine, but I was going for the vintage 98 era machine, except this has a 10 GB drive, were they even around back than ? has 256 MB PC133 running at 100 of course. Unreal looks fantastic ! 1024x768 high detail textures, very fast and very smooth. I know it's an old game, but I wanted something to show off Glide and 3Dfx, they really were ahead of their time. What games have you tried ? suggestions ?

Dude, get yourself a copy of Descent or Descent Two , they look real snappyin glide with the Voodoos at that res.
 
just incase no one has mentioned it: the VGA cord going between the 2 voodoo2's is a cable with ONE MORE PIN then the usual VGA cord.

/Has 2 voodoo's in a box, using VGA cables as a part of an HTPC.
 
You cannot use two V2's from separate manufacturers. This was one of the main stipulations of the V2 when it first came out. Metabyte (Wicked3D) was the only one that guaranteed that thier V2's would work another competitor's brand. You will need to download the last set of V2 drivers specifically hacked to work with mismatch brands.
 
I also ran 2 Voodoo 2 cards in SLI - from different manufacturers - but it only worked with a specialized driver. If you would like me to look for it email me at pied@pacbell.net - I probably have it save on a cd somewhere nearby. It will work.
