the new one:
asus a8n-vm csm geforce 6150 mb
athlon 64 3200+ venice
1gb corsair ddr
1x 80 gb seagate sata II (o/s, programs, music)
3x 200 gb seagate ide (recorded tv)
asus spdif out (using optical to receiver)
2x hauppage tv tuner
mce 2005

the old one:
abit nf7-s
athlon 3000+ barton, 400 fsb
onboard soundstorm optical out
(the 80 gb sata drive not used here)
everything else the same (had to reinstall mce w/ new one)

the problem:
the new install works great except: AUDIO!
mce remote, gyration keyboard, volume controls appear on screen, but no change in volume.
using optical out w/ abit board, receiver ALWAYS stayed on dolby digital. now...w/ asus board it switches to "surround off" every time I try to play ANY media.

i know i just overlooked something stoopiD, but i could use any help that anyone has to offer. Thanks in advance!

What decoder are you using?

Is it set to pass all audio to the SPDIF port straight?

I have a few Asus 6150 boards in service and they all pass 5.1/DTS etc fine so I bet it's a software issue of some sort.

am using nvidia purevideo decoder. can't seem to find where the option is to have simple passthrough, though. i'm pretty sure i'm going blind.

Fire up a DVD in Windows Media Player. Then right click on the Nvidia Decoder icon in the tray.

That should bring up the full slection of controls for it. Ont he Audio/Speaker setup tab there will be an option to set passthrought to SPDIF.

Your old MB had Soundstorm for surround decoding. Your new MB (and anything other than NF2 chipset or an HDA card) using optical out will do only pass-thru to your receiver. What this means is:

a. No volume control from your PC (cept maybe mute). You will need to control volume via your stereo receiver.
b. Your only surround options are from DVD's and the like that the signal will be processed by your receiver. Everything else (games, mp3's, etc..) will be output as Stereo. If your receiver supports it, you can use it's own modes to simulate surround but it never is as good as the real thing (or even close).

I learned this the hard way years ago. The NForce2 chipset with soundstorm is the only onboard audio solution that does surround sound via optical for everything, and as for add-on card your choice is one of the Auzentech cards (which I just ordered their new DTS card).

Since Creative has their stranglehold on the audio market for games, it sure would have been nice if they would output their own EAX standards out the optical port on all their cards, but I guess they want to sell their own speakers. For those of us who use our HTPC's for media and gaming they have completely ignored us.

Hope this helps

i did get the digital to work when playing a dvd, via valve's suggestion (thank you!), but it still switches back to surround off when any other audio track (mp3, tv, etc.) begins playing (including system sounds). I really don't want to believe that this is as good as it's going to get... this was supposed to be a frakking upgrade. yeah, the thing goes faster now, but i've lost some of the control.... boo.

For the other sounds and stuff they may have there own settings to enable the SPDIF out.

Open up your Volume control and click on the advanced button. Is there an Enable SPDIF or Digital out type check box?

I know it works for things other than DVD's, I just dont have any of my 6150 based PC's in my reach right now.
