Sorry for the repost. I posted a thread earlier this week asking advice on voltmodding my friends XT PE. I wanted more people to view this. I voltmodded the card using just a 2b pencil. The overclock went fairly well. I am able to push the card to toasty speeds of 560/580. Im scared to go any higher. I ran some initial benchmarks and am now able to get 6054 in 3dmark 05. CS:S stress test I'm pulling in 98+ fps at 1600x1200 4x8x. Played UT 2004 online for an hour without artifacts. However, this did not come without a price. The temps rose from 39idle~69c before the mod to 47idle~88 under load. :eek: The case is adequately air cooled with 5x80mm case fans. In your opinion are these temps safe?

Update: I pushed the core to 570 and memory to 600 still no artifacts 88c max load. CS:S 100.25 frames per second at 1600 4x8x
 
Umm i dont know how high the core can go to, but 69c seems a little high. Mine never goes above 41c under full load. I know the VGA silencers do pretty well, just dunno how well they do with the x800's
 
well... 560 is only 40 more MHz than stock. Many that do the voltmod get more speed than that. How much voltage is going to the core now?

That I could not tell you, I took a risk and didnt use a multi meter. I simply drew a line around the transistor and went back over it. Reinstalled the card and the idle temp was 8 degrees warmer. The card runs on upwards of 88c under full load. Are these temps safe? The card hasnt complained once. ;)
 
If you volt-mod I'd prefer to do it on a watercooled card.
 
My core pegs 76C when I overclock the card to 560-570mhz with the stock cooler under full load. With the stock 520mhz core speed I never see above 74C under full load. Going past 80C is risky, but some cores will handle it no problem.
 
Overheat on 6800U is supposedly @ 120C according to the driver panel :D

your running a high chance of failure. thats too damn hot. 560 core is nothing for a NON volt modded core so you got some problems. :rolleyes:
 
Those temps are high. Mine is on air and hits 575 / 590 @ 68C load. I'd undo that voltmod if I were you. That's far too hot for 24 / 7 air use.

yeah and it's not really worth the extra 40mhz .. which is only 40mhz over stock speeds... not 40mhz over an existing overclock..... so it's not worth it at all except for benchmarking purposes :) o yeah and i just switched my thermaltake k8 silentboost crappy 80mm fan that only moves a tiny 27.5 .. something.. i forgot the word.. of air.. and put in a coolmaster 80mm that moves 32.11 something... and my cpu idle went down 5c and load went down 3c :) very nice... its now @ 23c idle and about 47load now... hehe.. and hey u guys.. do u knoe where i can get one of those 80mm tornado? or delta something.. that moves like wut? 50-60 xxx of air? and i dun care about teh noise eheheheh

You always go way off topic dude. Use google, type in 'Tornado 80mm fan' and watch the results just smack you in the face.

try putting an 80mm fan about an inch off the back side of the card blowing air onto the back side of the core that helps alot then if your still using stick cooling and doing a vmod your asking for a dead card. put a stock amd or intel cpu cooler on the core and bolt it down by drilling holes in the right place on the heatsink that will help so much for cooling then next best way is water cooling.

yeah 4 years... i don't plan or i guess neither is he going to keep a card more than 6 years........ the longest i have kept a videocard for longer than 4 years is my old ati rage3d 4mb onboard POS for 6 years on a compaq k6-2 350mhz haha
 
Yeah, life shortens from like 20 years to 15 years. Hardware lasts a lot longer than most people will have it. Lots of people are still benching Ti4600's and such for fun that have been volt modded to hell for years with no problems.

It would be long gone before it would die due to decreased life... Technically, adding voltage does decrease life, but in all honesty, you shouldn't even have hardware around long enough for that to happen :)

Why do you have to volt-mod when you can increase the voltage through the BIOS?
Is 1 molex not enough to supply the extra power needed when increasing the voltages on the x800 XT PE?
 
quick question..

wat are u guys using to measure the temp of the core? i have an x800 pro and the driver reports the temp but its hard to believe.. it always says ~30c... specs in sig
 
88 load is way too high IMO. If the temperature in your room goes up by 10 degrees you'd fry your card!!!

You can only do volt mods by way of a 2B pencil or soldering iron. It requires physically connecting peices on the PCB with the pencil or solder in order to increase the voltages. You can't do it through the BIOS.
 
Try forcing the fans on 100% under load and see if that helps your temps. 88C is too high. Thats not something I would be comfortable with using as is.

I believe V modding via the bios currently works on Nvidia cards, ATi cards need hard modded......

Your statement makes no sense. I'm sorry, but you have NO WAY of knowing this.
Every card is different. Especially nvidia and ati. maybe it went from 4 years to 2 years.
 
I'm using ATI tool to track the temps. I have adjusted the fan speeds as the card gets hotter. I v-modded my old 9800pro and it ran great for about a year until I sold it. I am going to back off and remove the v-mod. These temps are just to high for me. The vmod did improve performance, 100.42 frames per second in CS:S stress test at 1600x1200 4x8x pritty nice. I am going to remove the mod run it at stock for a while measure the temps. Perhaps, I might try again later with a lower voltage increase. Of course, I will report back any findings. At least we know that the card can handle very high temps.

Note: I don't plan on using the card for another 2 or 3 years, as soon as the next generation is out, consider it sold.

Edit: I removed the v-mod 39c idle again. Reran CS:S 91.84 frames per second. The highest I pushed the card to was 575/600 before I started to notice small artifacts only in certain points of the game. At 565/589 I hit beyond 100fps consistantly. The overclock did make a nice difference. I'll experiment a little with this card before moving onto watercooling when the next gen comes out. Yes, I realize that. Howevre, my question was why do people do volt-mods (Physical) instead of changing the voltages through the BIOS?
 
You should have your card done by Viper John. Look at me results..678/630. I am also TEC cooled.

Because you can't change the voltage in the bios on ATI cards.....
 
Update: After removing my last Volt mod, I decided to give it another try. The temperatures on my last mod were what really concerned me. I wanted to find a happy medium somewhere and I think I accomplished just that. I was able to now overclock the core to 560.25 and the memory to 590.63. Any higher and I would start to see artifacts, not while gaming but with the synthetic tests I ran. I used a couple synthetic tests and some gaming to stress the card and make sure it was stable. Results: (CS:S stress test 1600x1200 4x8x = 99 fps average) (3dmark 03 = 12,439) (3dmark 05 = 6,124). I proceeded to play UT 2004 online for about an hour and Far Cry for also about one hour, and am happy to report artifact free. Note: This was all accomplished on stock cooling! Well, ok I do have a nice ventilated case with 5x80mm fans 3 intake, 2 outake keeping the case a bit cooler than what your average Joe probably has. The temperatures stand at 42c idle and 70c under full load. Thats much cooler than my previous results. Note bad for a # 2 pencil and some guts.

Cool thanx, Interesting Note: I was able to push the memory higher up to 600 but this did not produce the best results! CS:S consistantly produced fps of 97+ instead of 99+ which I achieved at the lower settings.

Because the voltage is controlled on the card not through the BIOS of the motherboard, so you can either volt mod them or edit the video card bios if you're ballsy enough for either.
