i have currently OC'd my athlon 1700 xp up to about 1.83 GHz . the voltage has always been set to 1.600 and i just increased it to 1.650. im wondering if upping the voltage is necessary when overclocking and if it is safe.

It's safe to a point, because when you are increasing the voltage, the chip run alot hotter.

Is there a reason you bumped the voltage? Can you OC any higher now?

I think I have my 1700xp up to about 1.800v. and am running at 2.3 ghz.

Mine is a tbred, so ymmv.
 
well im only ocing with the auto settings in my BIOS there are 3 options: 1100mhz 1400Mhz and then 1833Mhz which i have it at now.. i havnt tried manually overclocking cuz im not that experienced yet. ;) u say u got yours to 2.4Ghz? my core is thoroughbred so im not too sure on how much more im gonna go on it. im not really sure why i turned my voltage up i guess there wasnt a need...some voltage settings cause my cp not too boot into windows and i gotta run it in safe mode and restart but i think ill leave it how it is.
