Hey,

On a whim, I just opened up CPU-Z this morning, and while I was looking at it, I noticed the voltage on my CPU fluctuates. The processor is a P4 2.4 Northwood, and the voltage seems to fluctuate from 1.5 to 1.616. Is this normal? I have had a bit of system instability lately, could this be the reason why? The motherboard is an Asus P4PE+.
 
that much voltage fluctuation is bad, +-5% is normal, but youve got a whole .12v of flux there... not good. Ill bet some of your caps are going down the shitter.

That is what I was figuring so.... time for a new mobo I guess?
 
yeah, probably. last i checked, the Abit IS7's (NOT the E2) and Asus P4P's were going pretty cheap... might have gone up due to rarity though :/ i dunno how common 478 boards are these days.

the board still under warrantee?

Not in the least (I bought it from a shady stand at a computer show 3 years ago, not even sure what the warranty is.... but it was an OEM part, no box, etc) and I don't deal with RMAs anyway. I had a PSU that went flaky (well, the fan died and it would overheat, system suddenly shut down, waited an hour, could boot back up for another few hours) last year, and it took me a couple weeks to nail down the problem, so, that could have possibly done some damage. I occasionally get a 'hardware error detected, press F1 to continue' message on boot-up, I usually just C-A-D and it doesn't show up again.

Honestly, if this system is dying, I don't care that much, it is pretty long in tooth anyway. I just need to back up my HDs and be done with it. A core duo iMac is calling my name as it is...
