I'm looking into getting an ATA so I can play around with VOIP.

My needs are pretty basic. I want to run one phone that will sit on the same desk as my broadband router. I'll make very few calls. I mostly want to play around with the technology.

Here are the ATA's under consideration. Feel free to suggest any similarly priced models that I've missed.

Grandstream HandyTone 286
Cisco ATA-186
SPA-3000
Linksys PAP2T-NA
Linksys SPA2102-NA
Cisco SPA3102

I'd appreciate pretty much any comments anyone has about any of these ATA's.

Everything I've read about the HandyTone 286 has been glowing. Seeing that it's only $34 shipped is there any reason not to go with it?

I've read many reports of PAP2T's dying an early death. Some people warn that the PAP2T's that come from Taiwan are the most unreliable. Are these counterfeit knock-offs or are they legitimate Linksys units? It seems like the majority of new PAP2T on Ebay are shipped from Taiwan.

i have an older spa3102 and its ok, as far as i can tell it works just fine. But using it with asterisk or trixbox is a bit of a pain in the butt. Although 3CX has a auto config tool built in for it..

I've had a SPA2102 for a number of months now. Not a single complaint from my wife, which is a good thing. It just sits there and works.

I work at a small (60,000 customers) VoIP company, we have used the following:
Linksys "Sipura" 2100/2102
Grandstream HT502
Zyxel P-2301R-P1C

And I have to say the 2102 is great because it will re-register itself every 30mins or so just in case you drop some packets or disconnect a cable, this feature is great. This device is horrible at APS'ing (Auto-Provisioning). The HT502 isn't bad, but very basic, and they only register on bootup (the worst part about it).
The zyxel is by far our most favorite device, it's really a full fledge router with the rj-11 ports. It has some extra feature inside the device which may of use (phone book, forwarding). This is our newest and best device yet..

Are you in the USA? I haven't been able to find the Zyxel P-2301R-P1C for sale anywhere. There's one store that has it in Australia but that's all. My guess is that it's not offered retail, only through a voip provider.

Its been 2 years since i use Voip at home, and i have a SPA3102 and a PAP2, and sincerely i cant remember the last time i had to logon to setup anything or fix anything. They have been working great. My opinion is that they are reliable, and im using one of those "chinese" PAP2.

Cheers

Interesting. It's nice to have a positive data point on those "Chinese" PAP2's.

I have a zoom ATA at home, has "just worked" since I configured it a couple years ago. I'll grab the model number when I get home. I think it cost around 60 bucks, and it had the nice feature of gracefully failing over to the hard line if it lost power. Overall pretty spiffy.

I wouldn't count out polycom phones, they are very solid, the 331 is a great phone

yea I'm in the States, our company worked out a special deal manufacturing deal with Zyxel though (we color the WAN port blue and put out logo on them).
I'm suprised you can't find these online here at all, they're really nice units
